for students who are currently in the henry ford community college (hfcc) nursing program or have already gone through it, can you post 'example' schedules for classes and clinicals for each semester? (times/days)
what hospitals did you do your clinicals at?

there are five 'sections' your first year, and you schedule yourself for one of the five:
- sections 2 & 4 went to clinicals tu & wed from 7-3. lecture was thr 9-2 (hour break at 11 am) & fri 9-12. on thr, the longer classes included the nursing theory class, which was once a week (and so boring!)
- sections 1 & 3 had lecture the sames times as listed above for lecture classes. their clinicals were thr & fri 9-3.
- section 5 was a different animal altogether. that was the pm clinical class or whatever, or the two day class/clinical together. i am not sure about that one.
- mondays were usually days off, though clinical check-offs could be scheduled that day, meetings, whatever. after your first year, mondays will be for test days.
you are allowed to select your hospital for the very first clinical only. after that, it's the instructors that do the deciding, lol. hospitals include oakwood southshore, oakwood main, henry ford wyandotte, henry ford main, st. mary's, annapolis....all of them really. beaumont! botsford and kingswood (ferndale) for your psych rotation.
most clinicals started at 7 am, or 6:50 am. a very few started 8 am....don't expect that, though.
the section 5 lectures went from 9-2, then their clinicals went from 3-10:30 or thereabouts. i'm really sketchy about that section, sorry. more pm clinicals in your second semester. don't discount them! i was against them, but when i landed in one, vowed to make the best of it, then found it worked beautifully for me. i have kids, and hauling them off to early morning daycare was awful. better to have the mornings off and let dad do night duty with them. plus, better study time in the morning with everyone gone!! i think i will always want pm clinicals now.
the first semester will be very busy for you. you'll have to spend extra time in the nursing skills lab practice for check-offs. lots of nights and wknds! only one checkoff in the second semester, but it's a big one.
good luck. i loved my first semester. it was a lot of fun. the material isn't hard at all, but there's a lot of it, and it's the volume that you have to keep up with. don't fall behind.
keep in mind the above schedule was for the school year 2007-08, and may change for this fall. best of luck to you this fall!

Wow that was very helpfull. No one has ever gone in as much depth as you did in this forum. I'm hoping to start clinicals in the next 6 months to a year.

Yes, thank you 'My Simple Plan' for that very cogent breakdown of clinicals!
I am so glad that first semester I can pick a site close to home! U are a great asset to allnurses!
thank you so much for your reply! do you know if section 5 is hard to get into?
No, I think it's the easiest to get into because it's so bloody awful....morning lecture and then clinical the rest of the day. The only ones who want that are the students that HAVE to work and need the majority of the week to be at their jobs.
If you don't get the schedule you want/need because of work obligations or other matters, you can put in for a hardship, stating why you HAVE to have a certain schedule. You might not get it, but they will reconsider your schedule if you cry hard enough.
Amy, thanks for the kind words. I remember how I felt this time last year, and I am glad to be of help to anyone who needs it. Having that 'lost' feeling is the worst. Next year, it will be YOu who will giving all the advice!
