HESI exam

U.S.A. Colorado

Published

Hi, I will hopefully be starting at denver school of nursing in Jan. I was wondering if anyone has taken the HESI exam? I wanted to know how the test is, is it hard, or just basic stuff. I know it has math, grammer, reading, vocab. And I have been studying like crazy.

Thanks

Heather

Hi Sand Dollar and Heather,

Heather, I hope everything went well with the test. It was great that we got to meet each other, even though it was brief. I am anxious to hear what you thought of the test!

Sand Dollar, I actually did very well on the test. I found the most difficult section to be the vocabulary. I took medical terminology, but I really don't think it helped at all. Many of the words are words that you pick up from a medical environment. I think just studying the study guide that DSON gave me helped. I remember seeing several of the words in there. I would not have known them otherwise.

It looks like I will be going in January. However, I still have to apply in July. I just will not have to take the test.

That's great Dana! I'm glad it went well for you. Do you have any tips about the test? I am a little worried about the math, I am taking Algebra 121 in the fall but its been 20 years since I took it last - yup, I am old. lol

I won't worry about taking the test early, I'll use the time to brush up on my algebra and go through the couple study guides I have.

Thanks for all the info, I look forward to hearing the news in July. :)

Sand Dollar, Sounds like you and I are about the same age!!! So, I guess we are both old! I had Algebra twenty years ago, but am retaking it again this summer. Do not worry about the math. There is absolutely no algebra on the test. It is just basic math. If you are like my friend and I, we just needed to brush up on fractions and ratios. The study guide DSON gives you, is very good. I really think you will do fine. The test is a very basic test. The biggest tip I feel I could give you, is to study the guide that DSON gives you especially the vocabulary words, also the grammar section. I feel that several of the test questions came directly off of what was in the book. I studied some from a study guide on a website and I don't think that helped me as much as the study guide that DSON gave me.

Where are you taking your classes in the fall? I will be going to Front Range.

Dana - Its SO nice to have met someone the same age and pursuing the same dreams, you can whine about kids and school and hubbies and the person understands, lol. I laughed when I read the part about fractions...I just did a pre-test and that was the part I had to reveiw, go figure.

I will order the book online and definitely do the vocab, very good to know, thank you! Is the book you are using the same one Heather is using? Is it Evolve Reach Admission Assessment Exam Review (978-1416056355), I want to make sure I get the correct one!

I have been taking my pre-reqs through ccconline - absolutely love it! My home college is Pueblo, but we are only down here temporarily and will be moving back home to Brighton this August.

Heather - how did your test go?

Yes, that is the same book I used. Just study that and I am sure you will do great on the test!!!

Hi Ya'll!!!

Well I plan on entering the April BSN program. I took the Hesi in April, and I have to retake the vocab. :( I did find it the most difficult, and it was the area I had that hardest time. I've taken Medical Term. -- but just a few basic skill from there helped.. not much...

As far as study guides... I also bought the Kaplan one.. because i was really freaking out over the test...

the test was much easier that what was in the study guides, and all words where in sentences. (i'll be glad to tell you more if you like) i didn't like the evolve one all so much... however, after taking the test, the vocab words in the areas are important, i did see many of thoes words. (don't just study the ones in the vocab secstion, there are ones in the science part too more with bio.

Math was lots of fractions, and few english-metric converstions. brush up on that..

Reading was alright-- long...

as far as the flash cards.. i read so much .. don't waste your money...

Umm personaly I did not like the testing area, i felt like a cramed fish in a can. and right next to the break room! I only missed the vocab by 4-5 points.. soo i really think that had some affect on me... I can't stand distractions when i'm taking a test like that.

As far as.. october, I was going to go in the asn... but well thats full, I'm closer in my classes for the bsn anyways.. so i'll be trying to get into the april one.. Kelly told me when i finished my test they where only going to take 30 students, and then 6 on a back up... but its alot harder now... than it was a while ago, also its a good thing they got there accrediation!!

soo.. I'll talk to you ladies later...

btw, i re-test vocab on the 29th of may... I was tomorrow, but i don't have a rush!...

Hi Texanmomma,

Sorry you did not pass the vocab section. I agree it was challenging. There were a couple of words I just did not know. And, quite a few basic A & P words. But, I just remembered them from my A & P class.

As for the testing room. I really think they need to improve that. It is very distracting having people walk through while you are testing. Also, that room is HOT. Anyone taking the test in the future should be aware that the room is quite warm. So, don't dress too warmly.

Good luck when you re-take the test. I am sure you will pass.

So did you get in? and what program are you shooting for?

No, I am not in. They only placed six people on the waiting list for October and I am probably seven lower than that. Consequently, I have to apply in July, for January. I just will not have to take the test, thank goodness.

I am going for the BSN program. I, like you, was initially going for my ADN. Then, I realized I only needed a few more credits for my BSN and decided to do that instead. I think that is a wiser choice for me. I don't know if I would want to return to school again to get my BSN.

Yes I have to agree with that one to. As much as i think i would go back.. life takes hold sometimes.. and time is more valueable because of the classes i have left. But this summer I'm taking a english one (because they won't take the one i have ugh!! ) ap 2, and stats.

BTW-- did any ya'll take stats? Please give me details. i still don't know if i should take it online or lecture. As I prefer online classes...

and in the Fall Micro, and anther english..

Humm.. See i thought i could apply in July for January classes too... IDK.. I should double check..

Any tips, that i don't know so i can pass vocab? Did any of you have to re-take it too?

Hi Texasmomma....

Sorry, I just finished finals... ugh!!!! So, I have not been on for a couple of days. I don't know what advice to give you on the vocab. I just studied the book that DSON gave me. I really think you will pass it this next time. You know what to expect now. Study that book. There will still probably be some words you won't know, but you will know enough to pass.

As for statistics.... I took it at Front Range. But, I do know people that took it on line and did just fine. I don't know where you are at, but my instructor at Front Range was really easy.

I just finished english and micro. English wasn't too bad, but micro was a challenge.

Hang in there!!! You'll pass that vocab portion. I have heard that many people struggle with it. But, they do pass the second time!

Hello everyone!!! I am applying to the Jan cohort too and will be taking my HESI in July. I see that some of you took it in May and apply in July. I was told that I couldn't take the HESI until July 1st when the application process starts. How did you all manage to take the HESI before the applications started? Anyways, I am studying the study guide given to me by DSON and was wondering if you all had any other tips. Will studying the study guide be enough for the test? I hope all of us end up together for the Jan. cohort!
