HESI Exam Poll (Please Respond)

Published

I thought I would repost this regarding the HESI Exit Exam in this fashion.

I am trying to assemble a list of nursing schools that do "not" use the HESI exit exam in their program.

I am also interested in schools that use the HESI exit exam, but only use the test score as "PART" of the final grade and only use it to point out strengths and weaknesses to their students before they proceed to the State NCLEX exam.

Simply put...I am searching for all schools that either do "not" use the HESI Exit Exam, or schools that do not use the HESI exit exam to "fail" and preclude advancement to the State Boards. (Only used as a learning remediation tool)......

If you could please list;

What school and year graduated and if your school uses the test only as part of your final grade to point out strengths and weaknesses. I've heard this site is great for collecting data, hoping for a many responses....Thanks in advance to all who reply......

just took it today as a way to isolate any weak areas we may have to focus on to pass the nclex... no bearing on our grades... the scores i feel are pretty fickle! some of the smartest, highest grade point students did poorly and some did shockingly well... an lpn i know bombed it completely and then sailed successfully thru the nclex -- go figure! oh, and i'm attending/graduating from an accelerated program through Corinthian Schools, Inc. in grand rapids, michigan.

our school (houston community college) required to take and pass the Hesi test. we need to get 850 or better for the first try. after that, we have 2 more chances to take the test, but we need to get 900. after the 3rd try and the student won't get 900 or better, they won't be able to take the NCLEX and go somewhere else to finish their nursing degree, or take the LVN challenge test and become an LVN.

i also would like to know if some other schools require Hesi.

please state your school, the score that you need to get, how many chances you get after failing the first try, and what will happen if at your last chance, you still failed it. please respond.

Have to take the Hesi mid -program. Have to have at least 850 or you will not be permitted to graduate without a remedial course. (Huron School of Nursing , Cleveland Ohio)

HESI was new my last semester, we were the first group to take it. It did not impact our grade or ability to take NCLEX.

The plan was to use it in segments at the end of each semester, as a way to catch and assist students who had memorized the information but were unable to assimilate it into situations.

IMHO it had some problems though, easy mistakes. It seemed pretty clear it hadn't had an RN educator review it before it was sole.

University of Texas at Arlington uses the HESI. Taken in the last semester - must pass with 850 or better. If student does not pass on first try, s/he is given extra tutoring through the Mentoring program and must retake the test. I am not sure how many attempts a student gets, but I know they have to pass to graduate.

Auburn University Montgomery in Montgomery, Alabama requires that you pass the HESI Exit Exam with a score of 850. You have 3 attempts and if you do not pass, you cannot graduate. The only thing that is bad is that the third attempt is a week before graduation. I passed on my second attempt.

City Colleges of Chicago - OLIVE HARVEY. We had to score 870 or higher.

We get three chances, but that was never stated in our handbook. For a fee we had to pay the school a 6 week pass/fail remediation course with our nursing instructors. We all passed the exams that our nursing instructors gave us. BUT......... when we took HESI again........90% of us failed.

Now we have no nursing degree. We spent three - four years and over $30,000 and we have nothing.

I graduated in 1996, Missouri,.I have never heard of this exam?

Panola College uses this test as an exit exam. Pass or don't graduate. So far so good but they use it for every semester. If you dont pass in that semester you still have 3 tries to pass. We are in our 2nd semester and we have to take the pharmacology test which covers material we have not had. Last semester I believe only 4 or 5 passed out of 40 some students.

Not fun! But for your other questions Northwestern and Southern colleges in LA. do not use it. Hope this helps you. JA

howard college in san angelo, tx does not use the hesi to pass/fail a student.

we took the hesi, but only to give as an indication on our chances to pass/fail boards.

May 2006, Tulsa Community College. I believe this is the same exam we were required to take mid-program and again as an exit exam. It did not affect our final grade but we were required to pass it with as many as 3 attempts. I thought it was rather easy myself. Our school scored well above the ntl avg in all areas and I passed with flying colors, don't remember the score. I thought it was somewhat helpful in identifying areas of weakness however, it seemed a bit skewed in some areas. It showed marked weakness in areas that were actually strengths for me in all my nursing school exams. A couple of others saw that type of thing show up in their analysis as well. Was it the exam, the way we were taught differing from the way the HESI approached the same area or were we having an odd day? No idea. I didn't let it keep me up at night, that's for sure! LOL

Oh, our class was the first they'd started using this and as we were their test subjects it was cost-free for us but those coming up in classes after ours were required to pay for it.

I attend Northwest Shoals Communtiy College in Alabama. I was wondering is there material to study for the HESI? We have to pass the HESI to graduate. Today we took a part of it, so they could get a percentage of where we are in our knowledge.
