Herzing University PMHNP program?

Published

I have just been accepted in the RN-MSN program for psychiatric mental health NP. Has anyone done this program? I start March 7 and I am super excited and nervous. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

@Psychislife Hi I hope you're doing well! Do you have any updates for us? How is your program going? I hope you're keeping yourself motivated. Positive vibes!

@psychislife:  I start  on Sept 7th.  I will let you know.  Thanks and all the same to you!

@bluefox491 hey there! I have been completing courses since March! Everything is going wonderful. This Summer I had a community and public health course. I did not enjoy my instructor. We had to create almost a “faux” clinical. She was extremely critical of everything. Especially discussion posts. I am in research methods and theory now. I enjoy both of these courses tremendously. I start clinicals in March! I have secure two preceptors for my first clinical course.

@Medicalmusic I’m so excited for you! I am really getting in the swing of things. I truly enjoy the program. The support from teachers, my clinical advisor, and the university itself has been awesome. If you ever need anything please let me know!

@Psychislife Congratulations you're almost there and I am glad you have preceptors already. I found a spot for Medicalmusic and I (crossing fingers) at UCLA Reznick Psych hospital. If you could tell me who that instructor is that would be awesome haha. t b m c c ann 491 @ gm ai l

If you feel more comfortable discussing privately. Thank you again for all the support and follow up. I know you are going to do amazing. Cheers!

Hi everyone,
I will chime in here with my response if that's OK. I started the program part-time in January, and it has been going well. I have enjoyed more courses than others, but the program is OK overall. I haven't yet started any psych/mental health portion... my first clinical is in January. There will be some naysayers, but as long as you focus on your academic journey and not the program's bureaucracy, it will be well. online schools are the same these days: discussion posts, assignments, quizzes, and some exams. Unfortunately, HU does not help secure preceptors; they only give you a list of placement sites other students have used in the past, so maybe that's something. You have to secure yourself, but the school helps answers questions regarding that aspect, just not the securing. Based on what alumni have said, at the end of the program, enroll in a board exam prep course because there is so much to cover in a short time that you may not retain everything you need to know. Most of the psych learning will be during clinical courses, so get some great preceptors. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Hi @Psychislife

I am considering applying to Herzing for the MSN-PMHNP program. I will be transferring from the FNP program at UTA. I had a question on how the classes are taken. At UTA we take two classes a semester; however, they are one after another. So for example, I take Advance Patho for 11 weeks, then right after take an Evidence Based Practice course for 5 weeks to end the Fall semester. Most courses are 5 or 11 weeks.

Are the classes at Herzing taken at the same time or one after another? I'm curious because with working and taking care of a 3 year old I may have to attend part-time.

Also, how did you secure a preceptor so early? It seems to be the key to avoid stress when clinicals start.

Thanks!

Hey! So I am full time at Herzing! I have been taking 2 courses at a time. Here is my degree plan! I’m currently in 2 courses and my clinical readiness class.

@Psychislife Hi! So I’m considering Herzing for their RN to MSN PMHNP course (I’ve applied to Wilkes for their 2023 Spring start but looking for back ups). Would like to know how you’re doing at this point and get your take on their program and what made you decide on Herzing? Have you been able to locate a preceptor so far? I appreciate the input! Thank you ?

Hey @psychislife

I am only 3 weeks in, but I am already getting into the groove.  I am going part-time and I am only taking one class at a time at the moment.  So far so good. I know they are a newer program and still evolving, but I am liking what I have experienced so far.  I chose this program because I did a lot of research and this one just clicked with me.  I am sure Wilkes has a great program as well, but I have no issues with Herzing so far.  I am in CA and have connections with some PMHNPs so I am already networking and already have one in place.  However, I know this can be an issue with most programs and I have researched back plans.  There are organizations that specialize in locating preceptors through a network.  There are reputable and affordable ones, but free is always better :)  I hope this helps.
