Help on writing internship essay

Hi! I'm a senior in high school and I want to go to school for nursing next year. I'm applying to an internship at an Urgent Care center that is requiring me to write an essay on why I want to be a nurse. I want to write the best essay possible, so Im asking if you could give me some pointers on how to make this better (be as critical as you want!)

What Nursing Means To Me

Through the last four years of high school, I have been tormented with the thought in the back of my mind that I need to choose what I want to do with my life. Since I was little, I have gone through many different career dreams. First I wanted to be a veterinarian, then a dancer, then a model, and then an astronaut. However, when I came to my older years and started thinking seriously about what I wanted to do, I was lost. Opinions from my parents, family, relatives, friends, and well-meaning adults all pressured me in different directions, but I wanted to come to the decision on my own. Finally, through researching many different careers and trying to figure out what I would like, I gradually realized that nursing is the perfect job for me.

I have always been taught that helping people is the most satisfying way of life. While some people would argue that money is the way to happiness, others' and my own experiences have shown me that giving to others is the best way to find true joy. I'm fortunate enough to have known others working in the medical field, and they have all shared the same sentiment: that despite all the hard work and dedication their job requires, they wouldn't give up their job for any other because of the satisfaction that helping people gives them. This is why I have decided to be a nurse. I'll be able to fulfill my desire of helping people while also experiencing the challenge, variety, and opportunities that nursing offers. Nursing is not only a job, but also a powerful way to impact others and make a difference in people's lives. Hearing from what people say about nursing, it sounds like the most fulfilling career that anyone could have. Knowing now what I do about the nursing career, I can't imagine myself having any other job.

In addition to emotional fulfillment, being a nurse means having the power to care for others while also having my needs taken care of. By this, I mean there is a lot of security in being a nurse. Jobs in the medical field will always be in need, so I will be able to find a job that suits me easily. There is also a need for nurses worldwide, so I can fulfill my goals of travelling and still making money and helping people wherever I go. Nurses have a well-paying salary, so I'll be able to support myself independently in the future and I'll also be able to support a family. Another practical reason is nurses can work in flexible schedules, which would allow me to have free time to engage in personal interests, care for my future children, and engage in personal volunteer work. Additionally, there is a great variety of different types of nurses, so I'll never be bored with my job choice as I can always switch to a different department and expand my learning opportunities.

I truly believe I am suited to become a nurse. I am determined, caring, and hard-working, qualities that are essential for a nurse. Having the opportunity to impact someone everyday would not only be helping someone else but it would be helping me as well. The nursing profession requires dedication but in turn it gives an exciting, diverse, challenging, and ever-changing work environment. It allows an opportunity to learn something new everyday, which is something that I value highly. At the end of the day, I know that I'll be proud of the fact that I chose a profession where I can help complete strangers everyday, and I'll never regret that.

Is a nurse internship possible for someone who doesn't have a nursing license and isn't even enrolled in a nursing school?

I have the same question as Sour Lemon.

As far as the essay, take out the flexible schedules, job security, and good pay - they don't care how it will benefit you personally. Add something about your particular interest in urgent care and why you feel it will be a strong stepping stone into your nursing career.

Also, if you have evidence of why you feel fulfilled helping people and why you are suited to doing so as a nurse, include that. Have you volunteered at a hospital or nursing home, shadowed a nurse, etc.? Being a nurse does involve helping people, but equally important to having that motivation are organization and time management skills, interest and ability to apply the science of nursing, and a reasonably strong stomach and sense of confidence. Lots of professions help people; nursing is unique in the precarious balance it strikes of exercising both your heart AND your brain.

OK, now I'm even more confused. What is the actual job title and what guidance did they give you as far as what you're supposed to write about? "What Nursing Means to Me" is not a title that makes sense if you're not a nurse. You shouldn't be calling yourself "nurse" in your user name just yet, either ...wait until you actually earn it. :)
