I know discussing salary is looked down upon, so I have been reluctant to discuss it with my co workers. But I need some help with figuring out a fair salary.
I have never been salaried before, so I am unsure of what to ask for. I calculated my hourly wage with how many hours I will be required to work and it comes out to about 48,000. However with this salaried position I will be carrying an on call phone that I will need to answer for triage calls for my company. I will carry this phone for a week at a time every other week, so 26 weeks out of the year and will have it for 24 hours of the day even though calls don't typically come in at night or overnight, however its a possibility they could.
Is it fair to bump it up to 55,000 or is this too much? What should I ask for?
Thanks

When getting a new position I always first try to research the position. Ask around or look online for a reference. When discussing salaries with an employer I always ask what the average market range is. Most companies will have an established salaried range for a given position, most commonly given as the 95%-105% spread with 100% being the target market average. I do not like to ask for this until I have already done my research and then I will say, "Based on my research and experience, the market average for this position would XYZ-ABC range, is that about where your company is?"Not knowing your company it is hard to say what else to ask for so I will go off of my company. In my company rank and title is far more important than salary because at a certain point at a certain rank the benefits such as the pension and stock options become amazing so I negotiate my rank and title first, then salary. Sometimes with promotions you can ask for more vacation or PTO time.

Where you're at makes a HUGE difference. In my area, 55K would make you "poor". In other areas, you could live like a king.
Benefits, experience, etc. also factor in. I always ignore the "no discussing salary" rule. Just never drag up specific people or wages when using the information you've obtained to negotiate.
