Help with "Why I Want to be a Perioperative Nurse" Essay

The OR job I'm applying for requires a "Why I Want to be a Perioperative Nurse" essay. I mention that the first surgery I saw (CABG) made me want to work in the OR, and then I describe the surgery in about three paragraphs. Is this a good idea for this type of essay? I feel like showing my understanding of the procedure is a good thing, but I don't know...

This essay is so difficult for me to write because I am very "to the point" and cannot write an entire essay on why I want to be an OR nurse. Honestly, I can sum it up in two sentence: I excel in work that is technically demanding and requires a precise knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. I prefer an environment that requires teamwork, stamina, quick-thinking, and interpersonal skills.

I've always been straight forward and to the point as well, so I understand your issue.

Although description of the CABG can show our passion for the OR, I would think of this Essay as a pre- interview. I would talk about qualites i posess that would make me a great addition to the team, I would include examples of when I excelled at these qualities. (ie teamwork, samina etc)

Sell them on why they want to call you.

However, I'm not a manager, perhaps an OR manager could weigh-in with what they would be looking for in an application essay.

How about mention the 1:1 nurse patient ratio (not many RNs get to be with one pt at a time!), the honor of providing healthcare to a person on a pivotal day of their life, the day of their surgery. The RN is the patient's guardian and advocate while in the OR.

thanks, all great ideas. I got over the writer's block and wrote a pretty good essay. I do mention the stuff you suggested.

I think that you captured some of the reasons why you want to work in the OR right here in your first statement you made about how you excel in work that is technically demanding and so on and so on.. you captured in a nutshell the essence of why you are wanting to become an OR nurse.

I bet you will do well in your essay, and I bet you will be one fantastic OR nurse! Good Luck
