Help me with my "spider" problem!

Published

I have been in health care for almost 12 yrs in tech positions, and am finally starting nursing school this fall. From being on my feet I already have many spider veins, and am afraid of getting varicose veins as well. Does anyone recommend any type of stockings that are comfy AND work for the whole leg? SG

I am having the same problem, on my ankles and on spot near my knee. I live in hot and sunny Arizona, stockings don't sound comfy. Any suggestions?

When I first graduated from nursing school and started out on the floors one of the nurses was so kind to me that she gave me a pair of TED Hose and I used them alot. They really helped me. When I had a total knee replacement several years ago I got another pair (of course, I paid for these) and used them til they wore out. The next time you have to put some TED hose on a patient keep the packaging. It has an address where you can order them.

I use TEDS as well and can notice the difference in the way my legs feel at the end of the day when I don't have clean ones and wear regular socks instead!

Until you can get your hands on some TEDs J.C. Penney's makes a real nice support hose. Can't remember it, they weren't cheap, something like $20-25. But one pair is so sturdy they will last forever.

Put your feet up at home whenever possible and exercise.

spider veins are caused from hormones, heredity, pregnancy, excess wt, etc. many people who do not stand on their feet and athletes have them as well. there is lasar treatment for spider veins that is very effective, that requires no surgery. i would recommend having that done and then maintaining it on a yearly basis. ted hose is ok to wear temporarily like during surgery, but i would think that many people would feel uncomfortable wearing those under pants on a hot day. a few people are also allergic to the latex and syntethic fibers found in ted hose. there are also saline injections for vericose veins. see your dermatologist for the latest info. on this matter. :)

thank you everyone for all the advice so far. i will probably find some sort of hose to hopefully prevent more vessels from popping up. i have had 3 children, but am slim and fit. i am an athlete (sort of!) so all that combined with my job adds up to the problem. hope i can at least slow it down. sg

How much does the laser treatment cost each time. A freind said insurance will cover if their causing pain. Mine don't cause pain, but looks like a bruise on my leg that won't go away. Very unsightly in a miniskirt! And it's to hot for pantyhose!

Support pantyhose are your best bet!
