Help with pre-reqs

Published

I'm starting one of my very important semesters of science classes that are required to get accepted into the classic BSN program at my University. I have had to take some semesters off because of health problems so I am anxious to start again. I have never been an outstanding student because I never really cared before. Now that my health and life are back on track I am extremely passionate about becoming a nurse but I am extremely worried that I won't get accepted into the program. This coming semester I am taking A&P and Chem. I need advise so that I can be a different student than I have been in the past so I have a chance at fulfilling my dream. Any tips or stories of inspiration that will help me finally succeed??

A and p is very time consuming, but worth it. I would suggest recording your lectures, which helped me. Also review daily instead of craming studying in all at once.

Study hard, stay focused, and be dedicated to what you are working towards. Remember you get out of your work what you put into it.

For A&P I suggest YouTube video's for different area's of the body, and also look on Amazon at the different visual anatomy atlas books they have on there. Flashcards were also a great tool for me during A&P for the different terms and definitions. Anatomy is all about memorization, the Phyisiology is taking all that memorization and putting it into perspective with how those parts you memorized actually function.

For Chemistry, I suggest looking over math.com if you need to brush up on your math skills for working the equations. Also check out YouTube for chemistry help video's as well.

Study, study, study. Read the book, read your notes, highlight, draw out diagrams, talk out loud to yourself, make flashcards, watch videos, whatever works for you. Record your lectures if you can and re-listen to them. Find out your professor's office hours and USE THEM. They're there for a reason. I'm sure at a University your school has an academic success center with a tutoring lab in it, USE IT. I've practically lived at mine and it's an invaluable resource for students.

Good luck!

Stay focus on your goal and why you are doing it. What is your inspiration? Let that drive your committment to the program. Things will seem very difficult at times, but other times will be very rewarding. It will all be worth it in the end.

I sucked as a student in high school (1.71 gpa). I came back to college after 20 years and did very well with my pre-req classes (3.5 gpa). Nursing school has been very challenging for me and I've had setbacks, but I'm still going strong. I have fallen five times and I have risen six... just keep going, follow your heart, pray, and do it for the right reasons!

Do not be afraid. If both classes are too hard at once, then drop one and concentrate on the other one. Time will go by no mattter what, so what if you have to delay your goal a semester or so? The beauty of life is in its journey!

Stay on top of your work in both courses. I'm taking A&P this coming semester so I can't speak to that, but only reiterate what others have said to me, and that's DON'T FALL BEHIND! There is so much information coming at you it's crazy!

I have taken General Chem I & II and am taking a biochem class coming up for fun! I'd say the best advice I can give you, if you haven't recently taken a chem class (like high school chem) become familiar with everything on this website ChemTeam: Main Menu

and you should go in confident in your basic skills. I commend you for taking two time consuming and 'perceived as' difficult classes. Good luck to you and I hope your health problems improve and you knock this semester right in the you know whats.

Like everyone said, stay on top of it. Chunk your studying and do a little every day. Have a planner & write your assignments/test dates in as soon as you get your syllabus! Take advantage of any open labs or tutoring center sessions your school may offer. Only miss class for emergencies and stay on good terms with your teacher. Good luck!

Thank you all so much!! All of your input was very inspiring and helpful! Good luck to all of you :)
