I doubt that you would actually have to be a nurse at all, strictly speaking. While it would only make sense...it's not necessarily a legally binding thing. Do you have to have a business degree to be a CEO? Do you have to have an accounting degree to be a CFO? In practice, yes because you'll likely never make it to the top without the appropriate degrees...but technically...not so much.

thank you.I would like to think that I am actually being directed by someone with some type of credential, for the safety of my own license.I have never heard of this before.Director of nursing has always seemed to be rn or above.I just wonderd the legality of it all.I wondered how certain things get signed and all that stuff.Maybe I just always assumed you had to be an rn.Its hard to know what you can or cant do,anymore.I want to be careful.

I think this is an interesting question. I read another thread where someone posted that their DON was a medication aide!

I have seen one DON who was an LPN. She was exceptionally good. She'd been an LPN since Noah, and kept going like the energizer battery. Almost all DON's that I have known (Tennessee) have been ADN's. I have a BSN. My corporation has 20 nsg homes, and I am the only one with a BSN. All others have an ADN. I thought that in this state you had to be an RN, but they would grandfather in an LPN who was already in that position.
