It is proof that the things , tasks, that we do are making a difference in the positive outcome of the patients we care for. For a third year nursing student, it is imperative to stay current in the research that is relevent in your area of specialty. If you are caring for a bariatric surgery patient, you need to refer to policy and procedure manuals as to exact care but looking up scholarly resources, that can be found under google, advanced search and go to the bottom and check scholarly resources (journals) that are current over the last year. This enables you to be a forward thinking practioner. Evidence based practice is putting into practice the newest research findings that have been tested and retested by peers in research studies. We are not always doing the best for our patients based on the newest findings. I will give you an example: Evidence based research provides other disciplines, like MD's that there is proof to what you are saying. This is rhe rationale of why you are doing what you are doing. The evidence reflects that patients that exercise 30 minutes 3 times a week, eat a healthy diet, low in saturated fats and practice stress reducing techniques daily have a lower incidence of heart disease. Why do we know this, the research studies were performed on large groups of people, in more than one study had the same type of results when tools (cardiac cath, cardiac dopplers) were used to measure the outcomes. Evidence based research also assists the management practioner in promoting change, ie:best practice for central line cleaning, this promotes change in policy for better patient outcomes. Hope this helps.

Feb 25, 2007 i am also a third year student and everything you do as a nurse should be evidence basedyou do your 5 rights to medication administration because it has been proven to decrease med errorsyou only give certain volume amounts per injection site because it has been proven that that is all the volume amount that the site can takeyou wash your hands when you enter a clients room and when you leave because its proven that it reduces nosocomial infections
