Nursing Students Student Assist

Hi gals and guys...I am currently having to write a paper on the profession that I intend to go into for my English class. No big deal, but today my prof through a twist to it if wanted to we could write about different classifications in the same profession...ie ER, L&d, PICU ect. And now I'm thinking about redoing my paper...beings I haven't totally decided what field I want to go into...if any one of you is willing...could you please respond with the field that your in, some of your daily tasks, what you find most rewarding about your job, and what are the things that you despise about your job (be specific, not just "staffing issues", b/c all nurses seem to have this problem. It could be a personal issue that you deal with at nursing....eg hating to watch as a doc does a spinal tap on a 6mo child, b/c it makes you cringe...things like that...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance for all your help...

Carrie

I hope it's not too late, but here are my thoughts. I currently work as a SNE on the OB unit at my local hospital. 95% of the time I am in the nursery alone. It is my responsibility to do the shift assessment on each infant on the floor, give them their bath, change their crib linen, and restock their crib. I then document the assessment findings. Throughout the rest of the shift I monitor I&O on the babies, and help with breastfeeding - which is one of my favorite parts of my job! One of my least favorite parts is preparing the babies for and being there when they are circumcised. Both of my boys are circumcised, but I'm thankful I didn't watch it. LOL I think helping with breastfeeding is the most rewarding part of my job. It's so nice to work one day and help a mom who is really struggling getting the hang of it, then come back the next morning and see that the baby is nursing like a pro. I just love it!

I can tell you , I used to work as an LPN in a doctor's office and I really did love it. At first, I dreaded when the children came in for their physicals b/c I was the one that had to give them their shots. But then even though I hated to see them cry I knew that I was helping to keep them from an unhealthy childhood and to see the love between the parents and thier children was great. I worked in a Family Practice office which means the doctors took care of anyone age 2 months to 100 years so we took care of whole families. I loved getting to know the families and watching the children grow up. Sometimes you felt like you were a part of their family too. The hours weren't always the best and so after my 2nd child was born, I chose to leave so I could spend more time iwth my own family. I do still see old patients around town now and thena nd it is nice when they recognize me and we can catch up. Plus, I work at the local hospital and (unfortunately) I do see some them here too. But I think knowing them from the office helps me to take care of them better here.
