Are there any OSUMC RN Internship/Residency Graduates out there?

I've been offered an interview for their program and am looking for any hints/tips you may have. It's a panel interview and the program is extremely competitive...so any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help:specs:

Hi ,

I can't offer any help. It has been 10 years since I did a panel interview and it was in a totally different area. I did have a question though. How did you get the interview for the OSU program? Did you just apply, go there personally, etc. I am an OSU grad in a different area. I hope to start at WSU in March for nursing though. I would love to move back to Columbus when I am done with my program.

Thanks,

D

You have to apply online to their RN Internship/Residency program. They will only accept applications for this program online. You also have to submit 2-3 letters of recommendation from clinical instructors/RN managers (if you're a PCT).

Thanks for the info. Good Luck on your interview I am sure you will do great!

wsuchic1, did you have your interview already? How did it go? I am also interested in the OSU internship program and any advice you could offer would be great. Thanks.

Hi Jannah!

Sorry, it's taken me a few days to respond...I just saw your post. I had my interview about two wks ago and I think it went well. It was a panel interview (a RN manager from the Heart Hospital, RN recruiter and RN Educator, the assistant director of the program was supposed to be there but couldn't make it). It was very stressful but they were really nice and tried to put me at ease.

I would suggest becoming a PCT...the director of the program stressed the importance of doing an externship, if possible, and working as a PCT (preferably on the unit that you'd like to work on after you graduate). The Internship/Residency program has been in place for 10 years and really seems like an impressive/supportive program. It includes not only additional classes specific to the track you apply for but also orientation to all of the equipment that you'll be using on the unit.

It's a competitive program...out of over 200 apps, only around 50 or so are chosen. I hope I'm one of the 50...I'll know soon. I think they have a Career Exploration Day event that is held every year. The last one was about 3 wks ago. I don't know when you plan on applying but this would be a great event for you to attend. They'll provide you with all kinds of info concerning the Internship/Residency program and they will also give you a tour of the building/unit for the track that's of interest to you.

Good luck!

Please keep us updated on the position!!

How much experience do they want as a PCT? I did it for 8 months and just quit. I started in med/surg and switched to float and I really did feel like I quit learning. My job became so mundane I didn't even have to think about it... I'd like to avoid going back during nursing school, especially since my nursing knowledge will be even higher... I already got frustrated with the limitations put on me!

I do plan on doing a summer externship during my summer off in nursing school, however... hopefully in acute care.

Well, here's an update:

I was offered a position at OSU!!!...and I was also offered another position with a very prestigious hospital. I don't know how I'm going to make a decision. Guess it's time to whip out a sheet of paper and compare pros to cons.

This is gonna be a tough decision to make...

To answer your question about PCT experience-the associate director of the program stressed how much they want their candidates to have some experience as a PCT but she didn't specify length of time. She also told me that it's a very competitive program, so I guess you would want to have as much experience as possible to make yourself stand out. I started out working as a float PCT full-time and then switched to "Pool". Switching to a pool position was the best option for me because I made up my own schedule...I worked as much and as little as I wanted so that I could schedule around care plan assignments, clinicals, and papers.

Wait, I'm confused.

You were accepted into the internship or you were offered another position? I interviewed for the internship at the James and they said I wouldn't hear either way until February. Am I out of the loop? I hate to be out of the loop.

I was accepted into the Ross Heart Hospital track and I was also offered a position at another hospital...so, I have a tough decision to make.

HR told me yesterday that the Ross Heart Hospital track was the first to finish interviewing so don't fret...it sounds like other tracks may still be interviewing. If you haven't done so already, I would contact the Nurse Recruiter for your track.

wsuchic1 - congrats on the acceptance! I'm sure that was a very competitive position!! OSU has a great reputation and I think Columbus, OH is the best "big" city to live in Ohio by far. I love it here.

I might look into working as a PCT again on a PRN basis during nursing school. Hopefully I can find somewhere more exciting to work than just med/surg though :)

Big Big Congratulations on the Ross gig! It is a beautiful hospital and a great population to work with. I work at OSUMC now as an SNA, mostly in the main house and whenever I float over to Ross I always thing, oooo, it's nice here.

I interviewed for the James track in mid December, and am waiting anxiously to hear. Those folks over at Ross are a super efficient bunch! Do you have any idea how many other people will be in your cohort? I'm sure you'll have a fantastic experience and hurray for you!
