I am a new grad I have been applying for hospitals in chicago and south suburbs I applied to one LTC and got offered a job, which is great, but the only problem is should I start my career off in a LTC or is a hospital what I need to kick things off. Please advice anyone.

LTC is easier for new nurses because you're given a chance to get to know your patients, whom are more commonly referred to as residents because of the long term care environment. LTC is better than nothing & in this economy, most hospitals aren't hiring. You will be given an opprotunuty to use & perfect your nursing skills. Start your career in an LTC & use it as a stepping stone. Right now, your main objective is to get some experience.
Thank you for your reply I was just afraid that I wouldn't learn the same kinds of skills that I could in the hospital, but your right this economy is soooo bad right now. I didnt expect it to hit nursing like it has. I guess I have a decision to make and fast because no ones going to be holding a job for me to decide.
Thanks for your input.

I would definitely take the job. I held off for a while in applying to LTC's, but I finally did and still have YET to hear from anyone. WTH. I think at this point, any experience is better than sitting here losing my nursing skills, ya know? I have applied EVERYWHERE. Name it, I applied. And the longer I'm out from nursing school and not working, the worse I feel it looks to potential employers. I'm starting to seriously consider moving out of state (Texas and Florida seem like the only places hiring new grads) or joining military. My loan repayments start in March and I am freaking out. Can I ask what LTC this is?
A nurse recruiter called me the other day from an agency and asked how much experience I had, and I was like, "Uh entry level, I'm a new nurse grad." And she was like, "Oh, yea, we don't have any hospitals ANYWHERE in the country for those, but you might want to try this ONE hospital I know of in Texas." I was like "Great, thanks."
Anyway, good luck!! Hope everything pans out.
