Hi fellow nurses! I had to blow the dust off my allnurses account to come and ask this question ;) I have been working as an RN for 2 years on a Med-Surg/Tele floor and was an LPN for a short time prior to that. My dream has always been to work in L&D and my opportunitiy may have finally arrived! I have an interview scheduled tomorrow for L&D. Im not sure what type of questions I may be asked and I dont want to blow it! Any tips or suggestions on selling myself would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Well, there is always the question about your strengths and weaknesses. And of course the one where they ask you about a time when you had a disagreement or confrontation with a coworker and how you handled it. That's all I can think of right now!

I really don't have any advice I guess... but good luck!!! :)

Oh, and I'd probably be prepared for them to ask you WHY you want to work in L&D.

I was asked about what to do in a precipitous delivery situation, a shoulder dystocia, a PPH and I believe something about a baby born not breathing with a HR

here is the list of questions i answer in essay form before any interview:

tell me a little about yourself, what you’ve done, and what you’re interested in. (talk about your accomplishments, professional experience and professional goals. don't talk about family or personal life.)

describe a situation where you went above and beyond the call of duty with a patient during a clinical or work experience.

give me an example of a time when you had a difficult patient and how you handled that. how did this turn out, how did they act/respond (later on)?

what type of person do you have a hard time getting along with/working with, and how do you handle that?

what was your easiest/ most difficult/ and favorite clinical and why?

why did you choose to apply to this nursing position (over the others)?

why should we pick you for this position, selecting from a very competitive group of candidates?

what would your manager say about you? what would your charge nurses say about you?

why l&d? why are you interested in this group of patients?

where do you picture yourself down the road, in terms of your long-term goals?

what do you like about nursing?

give me an example of a situation from your clinical experiences when you used the nursing process. how did the patient react/handle this?

tell me a little about your previous job experience as an rn.

why should we hire you and what have you done to prepare?

what are your strengths and weaknesses?

maybe a question about cultural differences...?

what attracted you to the hospital, and why do you want to work for us?

that's all i got. good luck! i hope you get it.

I think SaraStrong hit all the big ones. I had many of the same on my L&D interview two weeks ago. Use those as your prep.

Also do your homework on the institution. Its good to know what their mission and vision is and the same of the unit if they have theirs available on the web. For example, the hospital I interviewed at is a Baby Friendly Hospital and I looked up when they became so, and asked them how that process was and how the public as responded (I also did my capstone project for school working at another hospital with their Lactation department to help increase their breastfeeding rates, so I also worked that into the conversation).

Most importantly...just be yourself. Show them your enthusiasm for this specialist and just wow them with your credentials, experience and dedication. You will rock it! Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes!

Thanks! Ironically, I was not asked the usual strengths/weaknesses, etc questions. She spent most of the time talking and telling me about the unit and the current transition to LDRP nursing, creating a lot of uproar on the unit because a lot of the staff was not on board for it, some have left because of it, and some are only still there until they find someplace else to go because they are that strongly against being crosstrained to do it all. Her main concern was having a positive attitude and being someone who is willing to be one of the people who over time change the culture of the unit and also wanting to know if I was assertive enough to hold my own. She also said I got extra points for being persistent (I have contacted her multiple times over the past few months) because it showed I really wanted to be there. I was asked to give an example of a situation where I was assertive in the clinical setting. And how I would handle negativity amongst coworkers who are being resistant to change.
