Dear Nurse Beth,I am in a career limbo right now. I am a LVN. I got hired as a correctional nurse for County Jail. I have always wanted to try this type of setting. I have worked before in a behavioral setting as a CNA. I currently worked at a clinic as a LVN and they have offered me the lead position with more pay. I really do like my job but I want to try the correctional nurse as well. I have done the pros and cons. And I'm still confused, I do not know which one would benefit me in the future.
Dear Confused,
You can never be 100 % certain when you make a job change, so the feelings are natural.
As to which would benefit your future, that depends on...which future? Where do you see yourself down the road, and which choices you make now align with that?
Working as a correctional nurse will not necessarily benefit the future you in a clinical leadership role. However, if it's a county job, some counties have great benefits and even pension.
I'm impressed that you were offered the lead position and a promotion in your current position. They see something in you, and you might want to develop that side of you. It would look very good on a resume.
A other thing to consider is which job will position you for more options in the future. Do you think you'd have more options with lead LVN in a clinic setting on your resume, or corrections in a county jail?
Best wishes in your decision,

Did they only offer to promote you after you submitted your resignation? That would weigh into the decision for me.
