Can anyone tell me how long a BSN graduate nurse in CT can work without a license? I just graduated and unfortunately dont have the monetary resources to take the NCLEX for a few months and I want to know how long I can work, if at all.

Can not work as a nurse with no license

can not work as a nurse with no license

silverdragon is correct. but in connecticut you can work as a graduate pn (practical nurse) or graduate nurse (rn) until you take your nclex.

once you take the nclex you no longer hold the "graduate" status and can't work as such. if you fail the nclex, you cannot work ever again as a graduate nurse. if you pass, you are a licensed nurse and are able to work.

there is a time frame that you can work with your gpn or gn.

here is part of the "ruling" on grad nurses:

"the laws governing the practice of nursing allow for the temporary practice of graduate nurses,

pending the results of the licensing examination. section 10 of public act 04-221 codifies the

current policy that graduate nurses may practice for a period not to exceed (90) ninety calendar

days after the date of graduation, provided that such graduate nurses are working in hospitals or

other organizations where adequate supervision is provided, and that all temporary practice

privileges shall automatically cease upon notification that the graduate nurse has failed the

licensure examination."

here is the link for the whole ruling http://www.ct.gov/dph/lib/dph/practitioner_licensing_and_investigations/applications/pdf/grad_nurse_info.pdf

Thanks for the link. I have tried on several occasions to reach the department of public health for more information but its like pulling teeth just to get someone on the phone. The reason I was asking is because I know a young lady who is working as a graduate nurse and has failed her state boards once already. Do you know if this 90 day time limit still applies in the case of a nursing internship?

I think you will find that the GN still working even though failed her exam is working illegally and could be putting her career at risk

if she indeed did fail the nclex and is still working under the title graduate nurse, then she is breaking the law by practicing without a license.

could it be possible that she is functioning as a nurse tech? even with that title if she is performing tasks/duties that fall under an rn's scope of practice she is still breaking the law by practicing without a license.

i'm sorry you are having a hard time reaching the state bon, i've never had a problem getting someone on the phone. are you calling the dept of public health number or are you calling the ct board of nurse examiners line?
