Hi,
I am currently in the process of applying for my license in SC. I have applied for my CES, and now want to apply for my license, but the first thing they ask me for is a social security number and if I don't have one my application will be declined!
I am a united kingdom citizen, still living in the UK. Any advice would be greatly received.

Hi, if a SSN is mandatory in SC then you need to apply to a state that doesn't require a SSN to get licensed and then endorse (transfer) your license to SC. As a foreign nurse that's what I had to do to get licensed where I wanted to.
Good luck
Ok thank you! That helps. Can I ask how long did it take you to get sorted and move to USA?

There are several states that will not supply a license without a US SSN. This you can not get until in the US with a valid work/immigrant visa. Usually all that happens is your application is processed you sit NCLEX and if pass you get a letter from the state saying you meet requirements and just require a US SSN for a license to be issued and this is easily done one you re in the US ready to work.
Once you have a employer willing to wait the length of time it takes to issue a immigrant visa then depending on where you was born the process can take anything from months to years. Check out the EB3 in the current US visa bulletin and that will give you PD dates that are in process. PD is the date the employer files I140 and it is approved

There is actually a Federal law that prohibits issuance of any professional licenses without a valid SSN, and has been for a number of years; it's just taking some states longer to come into compliance with it (some states are really dragging their feet; I don't understand why there isn't some penalty or consequence for that). Eventually, all states will be in compliance.
Even if the OP can get licensed in another state that doesn't (yet) require an SSN, I question whether SC would issue a license by endorsement if she doesn't meet SC's requirements (the SSN).
