Hi. I've been at my job for almost 16 years. I have a better job offer at another hospital because I will be able to work fewer weekends and holidays.
At my current job, I've had to work Thanksgiving and Christmas for 16 years and I'm tired of it! The holidays are all by seniority at my current job, not rotation, which is totally unfair.
My dilemma is, most of my co-workers are like a second family to me and it would be hard to leave. Also, going to work is so easy because I've been there so long. Change is hard for me.
At the new job, my salary would be the same, actually a little more! And, like I said, fewer weekends and holidays...also the same type of unit as well.
Has anyone changed jobs after so long and lived to tell about it?!
Thanks, and please give any thoughts or ideas.
I did it more than once and lived to tell about it each time! After over 10 years in one department and I left and went to another department in the same hospital. Then 7 years later left that hospital entirely and went to a sister hospital across town.I am still friends with many of the people I worked with. We go out to eat once a month or so and get together for fun!
As the old Girl Scout song says,"Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver but the other's gold." :monkeydance:
How funny! I sang that song to my hubby yesterday regarding all of this!
Thanks for sharing your experiences! I think I'll live too.
Go for it!! If you are unsure about leaving, can you keep working prn at the old place for a while? That will give you a foot back in the door without having to reapply. Sometimes change is better.
I can work a little at my job, but I want to make up my mind within a month because I don't want to work both jobs. My current manager wouldn't reduce my hours, so I'm stuck. That's why I'm reducing hours at a new job and getting better benefits as far as holidays and weekends.

Wow 16 years and still low on the seniority totem pole? My problem was the opposite. I had a lot of seniority and all the brand new people were given christmas off. I had to work Chritsmas, Thanksgivien & Newyears. There was not an issue about rotation, because most of the people with the great holiday schedules were brand new there. When questioned about it,(not by me) the Charge nurse said, "We have to keep the new people happy or they will leave". I had done alot for that place. Have always been very supportive of the new staff, trained a lot of people, on committees, etc. I gave them close to 8 years and i was a senior staff member. I DID take that personally. I have since quit. Sometimes i believe toomuch is done for recruitment and not enough for retention. However, 16 years is a very long time to work somewhere and not have any kind of senioritiy. that must be a great place to work if all the nurses have been there longer than that. I would also question the honesty and validity of the other facility's promises.

I left a job I loved and people I loved in January because I couldn't work for the management anymore. It was very hard for me to do, and now I have a commute that's a little over an hour one way. HOWEVER, I LOVE my new job, LOVE the people I work with and am SO VERY glad I made the switch. Change is very scary, and very difficult. If you don't do it, you'll always wonder if you should have at least tried.
Good luck!:kiss

I've already read the job description of the new hospital and it is true. I also know people that work in the same type of position who can verify it.
The position is a per diem one. I am very excited to try it out.

You're right, that's why I'm trying it. The schedule is to good not to try it out.
Thanks!
