There is so much info out on the web about delegation in nursing but DD is kind of special, I think. :) What do other people do when it comes down to things like tube feeding, caths, suctioning, etc.? How much do other people delegate and to who (i.e. house staff, day program, RN, LPN, CNA, etc)? Staffing and funding get shorter every day it seems like. I know the nursing regs are different in each state... what do DD nurses do in your state? Anybody?

At my location, every staff member has medication certification, that falls under the house RN's license. Day program runs their own outings with the clients. Direct Care Staff make dinner, give meds, shower, wash clothes, mop floors, clean bathrooms and drive them to program, outings and MD appointments. It depends on what type of home/area you are invloved in that will allow you to delegate certain tasks. Hope this helps.

Check your Board of Nursing and find out who, if anyone, you can delegate to. UAP's in my state may give meds after a training program. No cath's, but yes to tube-feedings. Suctioning is tricky. oral suctioning yes - suctioning a trach in a home environment only to the end of the cannula and only with specialized training. No insulin. Ever. Wording is very tricky. I can educate, support and teach, but not delegate to UAP's.
