Help choosing-Home Health or Dialysis?

Published

Hi all! I am an RN with 7 years' experience in a hospital, and now I am looking for a new job. I have two offers that I'm having trouble deciding between. One is in homecare with Visiting Nurse Service in New York, where I live, Monday to Friday. The other is in Dialysis (Fresenius) 3 days a week, 5AM to 7:30PM or later. I usually prefer a 3 day a week schedule, but those hours are intimidating. If anyone has worked in either or both settings and can give some info on the workload and environment, I'd appreciate it!

Specializes in Dialysis.

The "or later" needs clarification. Dialysis is noted for its long hours and is probably the number one reason people leave.

What did you decide

Read through other posts and research about Fresenius, Davita and others. The hours are extremely long which is why the burn out rate is so high, turn over is high and they are always hiring. Many nurses who love dialysis usually end up moving into management or inpatient - but again, call etc is all part of that. Usually training is also not have the facility you are hired into and travel to conferences is sometimes required. Nurses get lured by the pay but there is more to consider, for most anyway, than a paycheck.

If I had to chose out of the 2, it would be home health.

I know this is an old thread, but would anyone have the starting pay for Rn with Fresenius or Davila in NYC?

Hello, I'm curious to know which position you took. I have just been offered a position with Fresenius but am apprehensive about accepting it. I have just been looking into the VNSNY, and applied for a position with them yesterday. Most of my nursing experience is in dialysis, however whilst I was waiting for a dialysis position I took a per diem home care consultant position and I'm really enjoying it.
