it may not be the same sage that we can buy in aisle 6 of the ShopRite. I have head of a compound called Salvia being referred to as "sage" and it is supposed to induce hallucinations and is sometimes used by Native Americans to go on a "vision quest". It is not illegal, as Salvia has not been outlawed as of this point in all states, but that does not make it any less dangerous.

Sage is one of the herbs that used in some Native American (and various New Age-type) rituals like incense to smoke out evil spirits, bad vibes, or whatever (I don't mean to sound insulting or dismissive; I just don't know any better way to describe my v. general and vague understanding of this :)). The "bundled" sage the OP sees in the stores may not be for sale to be smoked, but to be used as "smudge sticks."

Here are a couple links I found when I did a quick search:

http://www.wehug.com/smudge-sage-ceremony.html

http://www.alleghenycandles.com/sage-smudge-stick.html

(Please note I'm posting them for informational purposes, not advertising or anything! :))

However, I'm not surprised high school kids might try smoking it -- high school kids will smoke anything.

thanks ladies :)
