"So anyway, I am starting off my day with a huge gulp of water - think it's a 32 ozer or so - yeay!" quote
Sarah - I can tell you are young. I would NEVER! drink 32 oz of water just before i was expecting to run around a lot! Not unless there was an ample supply of depends near by! LOL! :rotfl:
I too do not have the foggiest idea what 'commodities' are.

They're either really good and so Sarah will be running around trying to keep up with passing them out or they're really bad and Sarah will be running around trying to keep out of the way of people who aren't happy she was passing them out
ROFL! Glad I could bring mystery to the forum you guys. I work at Social Services, our commodities are food that we get at government discounts and then we give out to the needy. It primarily goes to low income families and adults/senior citizens who live on a fixed budget. It's actually a really great program, but we always get swamped and there's two of us that do it, so it keeps us hoppin. They bring in a basket or a box, fill out a card, we fill the box in a back room and then take it back to them and check off everything we gave them on the card.
I have a few minutes of down time, so thought I'd check in.
Hiker - you were right the first time, they are pretty good, so we run our tails off trying to get through everybody waiting in line for them. :) This time they had things like a box of cereal, powdered milk, canned veggies, canned juice, egg & macaroni noodles, rice, and of all things, frozen whole goose! It's truly bizarre the things the state sends us.
Any experience with elliptical that you are willing to share? Ability to use if severely overweight? Brand? Cost?Which is best for severly (100+) pounds overweight - Elliptical or Treadmill?
I have no personal experience with ellipticals - BUt I do have a very close friend who is about 150 #'s over weight, and she was using one. She said it really kicked her butt. Part of that was because she was a) severely out of shape, and would have done well to start by just walking for 15-20 min twice a day instead of killing herself on the elliptical right away, and b) an over achiever who, well, tried to over achieve on the thing.
As for models - don't go cheap is her only recommendation, or you will end up having to get another one later if you like it. You don't have to get the priciest model either, but the cheapest one on the market won't hold up at all if you use it regularly. Personally, I go with the treadmill option. I can do it even when I don't feel like doing a whole lot, and can distract myself by reading a magazine while I walk. Lower risk for injury and more likely for me to actually use it and get it done. I bought one of the cheaper ones at WalMart, and voila, I need to get a new one soon 'cuz this one is dieing.
Good luck!!!! Doing even a little will be great, and make you feel better to boot!

I use the elliptical at the gym sometimes. I use it for a low-impact workout. I felt like a doofus the first time I used it, though, but I pretended I didn't care and it was OK
I think it would work for someone who was severely overweight; the only problem might be in getting on the machine because some of them have higher step ups than others. It is definitely a good workout. Sometimes I set a lower pace because I need to review for a test and I can't do that on a treadmill, but if I set a higher pace and a higher resistance, I really feel it.
I think it was Blue that suggested getting a good machine; I definitely agree. You either pay for it on the front end or the back and you might as well get a good sturdy machine (not because you're overweight, just because they last longer).
I would try it at the gym first before you buy, just to make sure it works for you, though. Work out equipment is so expensive, you hate to buy something just to have it sit in the corner, mocking you :smackingf
If you haven't used one before, ask someone to get you started, it's not hard, but I know all the machines I've used you have to start "walking" before the machines turn on and that can be a bit confusing if you're looking for an on button. Also, until you get the hang of it, I'd probably not use the arms, just because you'll probably find the legs enough aerobic activity.
Sarah, that's a great program. There's a lot of hungry people out there. We've always been lucky to have family around to help, but that's a blessing some don't have.
Wow, if you're tossing frozen geese around, that's got to be great for the biceps--just lift them over your head a few times to work your tri's, too :)
