Health Insurance

Published

I recently accepted a contingent job with a new hospital, so I'll be leaving my current full time with benefits position very soon. Since the new position is contingent it does not offer a health insurance plan. Does anyone have any suggestions for an affordable one? My biggest concern is making sure my regular checkups for dental and physicals are covered.

It depends, is it just you? Where are you located? You can check out the health care market and get a good idea regarding plans specific to your needs and they also have dental options.

I personally hate the health care market, but its a good place to check out the going rates for plans and see what benefits might be available to you all in one place.

From my experience going directly through the insurance carrier is the same price as the market place if you receive no subsidies. So what I did was just look at plans and prices on the website, then called the insurance carrier directly.

For me personally, I went for a lower cost plan that had slightly higher out of pocket costs for the lower monthly payment.

I pay around 500 per month for myself and my spouse. Zero deductible, 40 dollar copays with a major insurance company.

Then you would just cancel when your new policy kicks in.

I'm single with no dependants in Michigan. Some months ago I spoke to some nurses in similar positions to mine that say they pay about $200 a month but for some reason I can't find any plans in that price bracket.

I would only believe that to be a catastrophic plan. That is a heck of a price for health insurance. Maybe they qualified for assistance with paying for insurance. I pay around $500 for my family a month, and that is an employer sponsed plan - so they pick up part of the tab as well.

Would it be a good idea to pick a catastrophic plan though? Or does that just vary from person to person and their particular situation?

I personally just want a catastrophic plan (Or a high deductible). I can handle the regular doctor visits and lab tests.

I'm looking at personal insurance right now - the cheapest just for me is $500. That's Obamacare. Blue Cross/Blue Shield is $600.

Value Penguin is a good site for comparing multiple insurers at once. I'm not sure what county in Michigan you're in, but in Wayne county for instance a Humana catastrophic plan is $108/month, a bronze plan is $145/month, and silver plans start at $185/month. Recommended physicals are required to be covered, although I would avoid buying dental insurance primarily for the purpose of routine care, dental insurance is for unexpected things, you're guaranteed to pay more in dental insurance premiums than you will on dental checkups, so even they are covered you're still losing money if that's why you bought the insurance.
