Health insurance during nursing school

Is anyone else concerned about health insurance while attending nursing school? The ADN program I'm waiting for is part time because the electives must be completed before attending. As a result, I'm not eligible for health insurance as a dependent because I'm not a fulltime student.

According to the information packet, clinicals may be scheduled during the day or the evening so at first I thought I'd find a fulltime job during 3rd shift with insurance (that in itself is not an easy task). But then I realized when the heck am I gonna sleep if clinicals are at any time during day or night?

I'm starting to get really worried about this. Buying your own health insurance can be prohibitively expensive or they can reject you at any time for any reason. Help!

Hi,

I don't have health insurance through my employer so I bought some myself through Blue Cross Blue Shied. THey have this program called Tonik Insurance (spelled just like that) and it is low cost insurance that basically covers you in the case of something bad happening. The premium is very affordable, your office visit copays are very affordable and the plan includes vision and dental as well. You can google it to learn more about it and can even apply online. They'll give you a decision within a day or two. You can also check the different insurance companies' websites to see how much individual insurance would be. I found the Tonik to be the best option for me, but some insurance companies do offer very comprehensive packages for relatively decent rates.

I hope this helped!

Each state has their own Blue Cross Blue Shield entity for that state's residents. Some states even have more than one BCBS licensee. So for health insurance - what one person has in one state is not what another can have in another state.

Neither of those points are true.

Bicster--can you help me understand how this is true? I do have pre-existing conditions, so as far as I know, that will make my premiums increase dramatically or make insurance companies decide that I'm a higher risk client and reject my application.

Some schools ofter health insurance though them...they have student deals they've set up with them. The school I'm attending has a program set up for students through Aetna. From what it looks like, it'll be the same price as I'm paying now at my part time job. There are various health insurance companies out there that offer student health insurance, though from what I read, they say you must be full time(for at least 30 days after your insurance starts).

I apologize, pre-existing conditions negate my above post. Get a job hippy! :D

If you fill out this quote request, this website is going to sell your information to 3-8 health insurance agents who will call you on the phone repeatedly, hawking their highest commission product. Think about that before your phone is ringing off the hook for the next couple months.

Have you used this service before? It would appear that they disclose that the information would be shared with the insurance companies listed. I'm assuming that most people seeking a quote are considering a purchase. The purpose of posting the website was to provide information regarding insurers specific to the OP's location.

No, but I've purchased leads from websites like this before. :D The personal data is not shared with insurance companies. It is sold to insurance agents and brokers all over the country.

This is from stage four of the quote request page:

"Privacy Notice: In order to provide you with a comparison shopping environment that will allow you to select the policy that best fits your needs, you may be contacted by multiple licensed insurance agents offering health quotes based on the information you have provided above. This information will only be used for the purposes of providing insurance quotes."

I just went to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield website this evening and found out that I can get an extremely basic plan for $108 per month. Granted, the deductible is ridiculous and I'll be paying full price for office visits, but I only plan on using it while I'm in school and then once I'm able to work as a nurse I should be able to get great insurance at my job.
