HCC ADN Fall 2008 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Anyone applying to Houston Community College for the fall? I signed up today for the HESI. I am scheduled to take it on 3/29. If I do well, they will place me into the summer pharmacology course. I am a little nervous. I would love to hear from any students that are in the program. Any tips on the HESI & the Pharm. class would be helpful! The thought of it... ahhh it boggles my mind! LOL

Thanks!

Anyone know what the selection criteria is for HCC? I know passing the HESI, 90+% in the pharma exam, a good grade in Pharma all count; but I wonder what specific weight each criterion gets. Any ideas?!

I just passed HESI this morning, so I'm really looking forward to starting Pharma in Summer!! In fact, I'm going out to get a Pharmacology study guide to get a head-start...

Congratz man, damn I took the test too but I did bad on the A&P part. Hey Jason, you got any pointers? Like what you studied over and what book u used. Gonna have to retake the test. Would appreciate it if you can help, thanks.

Thanks!! I really thought I had failed the A&P section, coz I felt like I guessed half the questions... I used a study guide and just went over each system one by one. I recommend "The Easy Way" series, I used their A&P and Arithmetic books and really like them.

Something that wasn't in the HESI guide was the Special Senses, I think there were 2 questions about the ears/eyes that I totally guessed. Other than that, I was surprised there were so many questions about the brain/nerves/muscle physiology.

Sorry that you gotta retake it, at least next time you'll know what to expect... don't give up!! :D

Jason,

Let me know what book you end up getting b/c I plan on ordering one this week! I want to pass this class with flying colors. THanks!

How did you do? I'm assuming you passed it too, congratulations!

Yes I did, Thank GOD! Congrats to you as well!!!!!!!!!

I didnt expect to see that many people there!!! They were a lot! I barely passed the A&P section... I honestly thought I had failed it due to all the guessing I was doing. I was very discouraged. I am so glad to have done it first. lol, but it came out ok. I barely passed and I wonder if that matters. Anyway, all I have left is pharm. & a humanities class. I am finishing up Nutrition, GOVT 1, and Microbiology now (knocking out a few extra classes now for my BSN while I can). I plan on bridging over later on; after a few of years of practicing. My friend took her Pharm. class last summer at Town & COuntry. I hope I have that option this summer. What about you, what are you views on this stupid test? hahah jk. Just happy to be over and done with :D

I started with the math, and found it pretty easy. I wasn't expecting word problems, so that took a little getting used to. Like you, the A&P was a bit of a guessing game and I actually closed my eyes before it gave me the score, coz I was sure I had failed. Anyway, the rest of it was a walk in the park, tho surprisingly I didn't ace the reading as I expected I would.

Like you, I'm getting some of my BSN stuff out of the way while I wait to get into the ADN. I already have a BA, so I'll look for a MSN program once I've got some more experience. I'm also taking Govt and I've picked up Speech/Sociology on the off-chance I apply to Lone Star.

While I hear mixed things about HCC, I've done all my pre-reqs there, and really have no complaints. Also, I place a lot of value on doing clinicals around the med centre. I hear that at Lone Star, you don't often get the chance to get down to the med centre.

If you review any good pharma books, let me know too! My partner is actually a nurse and he recommends the "Made Incredibly Easy" books, so I think I'll start there and see how it looks. I'll let you know if it's any good.

Oh, and one last thing, are you gonna take Pharma in person? I'm thinking about taking it online. I've had a full course load since last summer, and the idea of spending yet another summer in class............

hello there!

i am supposed to be in the program for spring 2008 that started just this january but i differed since i am almost 8 months preggers. i will be in the program this fall though.

i took pharmacology last summer and i was surprised how easy it was, you just have to be very diligent with your studies and be prepared to memorize and understand the lesson. perfect all the quizzes given online, aim a high score at the chapter test and as well as the math test and you will be rewarded with an acceptance letter at the end of the semester.

goodluck to all of you and hope to see you this fall!

I am also curious to know how they select. I am wondering how is that they let all these people go through Pharmacology and only what 150 people get accepted for the fall? Is that correct?

Hey Jason,

This is the book I am going to purchase to get a head start. My friend said this is the book that they are using NOW for the actual Pharm class at HCC:

http://www.amazon.com/Calculate-Confidence-Fourth-Deborah-Morris/dp/0323029280/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207167593&sr=8-1

I hope it doesnt change, but either way I want to purchase it bc it has great reviews! Hope I helped. :D

Sounds good! Getting them before the start is a good idea, getting familiar with everything as much as possible can only be an advantage. I'm still debating whether to take this course in person or online. Have you given it much thought?

I don't want to take this class online. I am too scared! Their schedule is up for the summer and they are only going to offer one class (so far) online. I am also in the middle of looking for a new job and I am a little concerned about HCC not offering evening classes for the folks that work fulltime until the program starts. I myself am not planning to quit until I know that I am in the program for sure. So I emailed the secretary yesterday and she did tell me that they are trying to get a class scheduled for saturdays (yay!). She also said that the courses that are listed NOW on the website are subject to change.

I also heard today that they are likely to offer a class at Town and Country. Apparently they've offered it for the last three years there, and are just waiting on a room for this semester. I think there is still a bit to arrange on their part... :chuckle

T&C would be very appealing to me if I decide not to take the online class!!
