Any one in the KCC ADN program

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

Hi!

I am taking my NLN exam to get into the ADN program at KCC in July for Spring 09, just wanted to know from a students perspective what the program is like.

Thanks!!!

:nuke:

how do you get notified when you are selected? and how much time does kcc give you to turn in all the paperwork from the packet?

you are notified via snail mail. i received my packet 11/4. acceptance confirmation is required by 11/10. health clearance 11/26. so yea it's prolly a good idea to already have your cpr/first aid and immunizations records. then you just have to schedule your doctor's appt for your physical.

KCC set a due date for all the paperwork for people who got accecpted AND alternates(if you are indeed an alternate, they should have sent you a letter with a specific date, if not it would be your best bet to call someone at the admissions office). I think the meeting that is required for both alternates and fully accecpted people is when all those documents are due. If you were accecpted and are not able to finish the required documents on time I think that's when they start moving on to alternates.

If you're talking about when alternates get selected to join the program, Wes normally calls you and gives you a couple days notice to make a decision. Are you an alternate?

yeah, alternate. the packet says to attend the orientation on 12/11 and complete all the paperwork just incase you will be selected. im still missing my cpr/aed/1st aid and pe on my student health checklist. i know due date for the accepted students is on 11/26. im not in a hurry because i dont even know if im going to get a call from wes. were you an alternate when you got into the program? so if you get selected wes will call you? when is the earliest or latest date that he'd call? im kind of hanging right now... i had plans to go on vacation in december (i thought i was going to get in) but now i dont know because what if he calls and i will be out of the country. kind of sucks... it's been stressing for me since tuesday. :(

have you completed your student health checklist yet? mann i really hope you get in to uhm and all the other students who applied for both uhm and kcc. i can just imagine how i would be feeling when i attend the mandatory orientation on 12/11... all the accepted students will be so happy and excited taking pictures for their nametags and fitting their new scrubs... i will also be doing the same thing, only i dont know if i will be in. how stressful and sad is that

i dont even know what my ranking is as an alternate. do you guys know how many got accepted to kcc? i was hoping i would be atleast the 30th student but i didnt even make it. :(

The CPR/firstaid thing is easy to get done. You got the checklist of certified cpr teachers? Call Ken Bambico or something. He comes to your house and does 1:1 training, it's pretty quick too. The physical is up to you.

Yes, I was an alternate. I got a call a week before the December meeting. It all varies, really. I know one of my classmates who got into the program as an alternate got called a couple weeks before the semester started. If you really think you did that good, chances are you will most likely get in so I wouldn't worry too much.

If you don't mind what was your GPA/NLN?

i have an appt w/ ken bambico on 11/28. gpr for prereqs is 3.8, for co-reqs is 3.7, and nln i didnt do very good... i only have 120.

Dayam you all you people getting into the program now got it hard. When I got accepted way back in fall of '03 my gpa was only 3.4 (cumalative for prereqs and co reqs). and i had a NLN of 134. Also i had classmates who only had a gpa of 2.8 or so. Good luck to you all, and be ready for the long road of studying and BS! careplans (something that you will never ever use when you become a rn. :D

Haha, you were smart. You got in before the huge influx of new nursing students. Did you ever go back and get your BSN? I'm contemplating on doing it, but I figure the more time I wait, the harder it'll be to find a job. So I'm thinking just concentrating on getting a job first and going to school part time.

k well there should be 1 slot opening up for KCC

Actually i did go back for my bsn, however, like an idiot i never finished it, i am like 2 classes and 1 clinical shy. To be honest i really do not see the incentive of having a bsn in hawaii, unless you want to be a manager or a supervisor (both position you willn ot be eligible for until many years of working) there are also adn to msn programs online only, which one can pursue after some hospital experience is gained. The UH route is guaranteed exceptance however another 11/2 - two more years of school, depending if you test out of there ethics and pathophysiology. good luck with KCC, i thought that the second semester was the toughest, after that everything goes smoothly. Finding a job migght be a hard thing, unless your up for ltc or home care.

They have some online thing at UH Hilo I was looking into, only takes about a year. And yeah, the Medsurg2 classes were by far the hardest. Donna is a hard lecturer, but her clinicals are awesome. Just finished my first OB/Peds rotation and going into psych next semester, so that should be interesting.

Honestly, at this point I'll take whatever I can get to work as an RN and get experience. Although I'd like to work at one of the main hospitals I'm perfectly fine gutting it out for a couple years in a LTC, I mean, that is where we started off.
