Having a hard time deciding whether to get an ADN then BSN or go straight for my BSN?

Published

Hello all,

Let me start off by saying that I am a 21 year old female currently taking my prerequisites for Nursing at community college. I have only completed 3 classes so far. I decided to aim for an ADN program, because I want get my degree sooner and be able to work and save up money before having a child. I have thoroughly researched the school I want to transfer to for the program. However, I have been hearing about how Bachelors degrees are becoming more in demand. I feel so behind already and if I went for the BSN right away, it would take longer. But part of me thinks I should get it out of the way. The problem is, how could I find a good paying job while trying to get my BSN? My fiance is still in school too so there wouldn't be much income coming in. What if I got pregnant? I just want to be prepared. What should I do??

thanks

1) use birth control, 2 kinds if possible.

2) any reason you are in a rush to have kids?

The choice is up to you and ADNs certainly have more trouble than BSNs in certain areas. Have you looked at area hospitals to see if they have a BSN preference? Your area may readily hire ADNs, maybe not.

If I were you, I'd apply to the ADN program but also look to see what BSN programs are available. It might not take you much longer than the BSN.

You would be better off getting your BSN. More people are looking for BSN's now not ADN's. You can do much more with that. Besides your young and getting the higher degree now will take stress off of you later. Who would want kids and have to go back to school later? I surely don't. Get the BSN and move forward from there! :)

If you think you guys can wait to have kids until after you get your BSN then I'd say go for that mainly because you would make it easier on yourself later. Just going through these boards you can see how hard it is to be a mom and student! But if you want to play it safe then get the ADN and see where you guys are at in your personal lives and then do maybe one of those accelarated ADN-BSN programs while working? Look at the hospitals around you and see who they are hiring and go from there.
