I have submitted a package for Clinical Laboratory Officer based on by BS in Medical Technology degree.

I will graduate with my LPN diploma in 5 weeks.

My intent is to finish BSN and then make a lateral move from Medical Service Corp to Nurse Corp.

My AMEDD recruiter assures me this process will be no problem but I would feel better if someone has actually seen this happen.

Well, got word that the selection board selected me for 71E but now I have to wait for a waiver board for final approval. Possibly another month. Sigh.

Needed an age waiver because "official" age limit on 2nd Lt. is 39.5 Y/O. I will be 39.5 this month! Who the heck decided 39.5 vs. 40!! Lol!

This despite my 7.5 yrs prior service.

Wait, this doesn't sound right at all. Your 7 and a half years prior service stops the clock on your age.

For me I was told I had to sign the age waiver because I will ascend in at age 41, rather than 40. This was for active duty, nothing to do with my 2LT status...what did you hear about there being an age limit on 2LT? I thought the age limit was for active duty versus reserve status. Even with the age limit on active duty status your prior service should deduct years from you age for consideration.

Please update on their answer as to why they are not counting your 7.5 years service as subtracting from your clock age?

If I had to guess, I would say there is no guessing until the time comes. I understand about being a new nurse but I would also not want to lose any rank ( and money ).

I know of one nurse who was active duty RN and deceided she did not want nursing any more and went to be an admin officer, not hospital related. The rank stayed the same. Not quite the same but a new skill altogether.

I also know of a active duty nurse who was a RN already and the Air Force payed for her to get her neonatal nurse practioner degree but did not use her as such. She did more case management things.

There are plenty of O-3's out there who have nursing experience but no Military experience, why not be an O-3 with military experience but no nursing experience. Just make sure people know when you are comfortable with something. Do not try and take charge just based on rank but more on knowledge and comfort.

That was my thought too. I asked and was told it was a 2nd Lt. issue. Thing is my AMEDD recruiter has been recruiting for 9 yrs, 2 yrs AMEDD and has really been on the ball. Everything she has told me so far has checked out so I trust her. I realize that no one is immune from making errors, but if my file was forwarded up the chain of command then why wouldn't those many other people say something? I've been looking for something addressing age limits on officers but have come up empty so far.

This may explain. If I understand this correctly, prior service does not automatically reduce your entrance age but a waiver can be granted for the prior service.

So it would appear this is normal and expected.

Age

One would think that age would be a simple category. One is either old enough, or too old, right? Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work that way. By federal law (10 U.S.C., 510), the minimum age for enlistment in the United States Military is 17 (with parental consent) and the maximum age is 35. This is to ensure than anyone who enlists on active duty can be eligible for retirement (20 years of service) at the mandatory age of 55 (60 in some cases). However, DOD policy allows the individual services to specify the maximum age of enlistment based upon their own unique requirements. The individual services have set the following maximum ages for non-prior service enlistment:

    Active Army - 42
    Army Reserves - 42
    Active Air Force - 27
    Air Force Reserve - 34
    Active Navy - 34
    Naval Reserves - 39
    Active Marines - 28
    Marine Corps Reserve - 29
    Active and Reserve Coast Guard - 27

However, prior service enlistees can receive an "age waiver." In most cases, the amount of age that can be waived depends upon the amount of time the individual previously spent in the military. For example, let's say that an individual has four years of credible military service in the Marine Corps and wants to join the Air Force. The Air Force could waive the individual's maximum enlistment age to age 31 (Maximum age of 27 for the Air Force, plus four years credible service in the Marines). For the Marine Corps, the maximum age of enlistment for prior service is 32, after computing the prior-service age adjustment.

The individual services have set the following maximum ages for non-prior service enlistment:

Active Army - 42

However, I was required to sign and age waiver even though I will be 41 upon completion of my program and ascession into the Army. Since I will be over 40 and not be able to get my 20 years in by age 60, (if I were to choose so) then I needed to sign the waiver.

It was explained to me that for folks who are going in, over the age of 40, and want to stay to get their 20 years in that they will have to sign another petition upon age 60 to stay.

So, even though we are accepted until 42, our age is still a special situation.

Hello again IU95,

This was the outcome of the December 1st review board then? I am asking because my application was before the same board, (my third try) and I am just wondering how long I should wait before proceeding with the AF.

Something about my packet is causing review board to pass me over, yet, my recruiter is baffled as to what.

It is hard to wait to get the final word...again!

The actual board met in late October. Then I had to get an age waiver. Then I had to wait for Senate confirmation of commission.
