Have an MPH. Thinking about BSN

Published

Hi there.

I have a masters in public health and work for a large non-profit doing lung cancer education. I have always liked one on one patient education and I am interested in the clinical aspect of health. Lately when I peruse jobs online, I find that the jobs I am interested in all require a BSN. I am interested in oncology, nurse navigation, palliative care and hospice (I think) and I am wondering if I should go back to school (again) to pursue a BSN. Would love any thoughts you can share about how to make the decision about whether or not to pursue a BSN as a second degree. Thanks.

I don't think we can help you make that decision, OP. This is a decision you would have to feel out on your own because everyone has a different opinion. If you arent happy with what you have now and you REALLY want to go back to get a BSN, by all means do it. But it has to purely be your decision. However, if you have any questions about nursing in general you want to ask that you feel would help you make that decision, I'm sure myself and others on here would not mind at all to answer them.

Totally agree with PP - The nursing educational pathway cess is far too intensive to be easily relegated into any sort of 'add-on' career decision. Keep in mind that it will also be a multi-year process to achieve your goals even if you are able to be accepted to an accelerated program. Those types of jobs will require nursing experience/competency ... perhaps in a hard-to-enter specialty area. So, you may end up investing a lot of time, effort & money only to discover that there are some insurmountable roadblocks (e.g., inability to get an acute care job as a new grad) you did not anticipate.
