Hello,

I was a graduate nurse and took my NCLEX for the first time this month. I failed it. I have never been a nurse,s aide (CNA) or a nurse intern/extern, so NOW in order for me to get back up the floor functioning as a semi graduate nurse (my temporary license is now void because I failed the NCLEX so I will be a nurse "intern"- less pay than a grad nurse- but anyway) I have to study for, and take, a CNA exam. Granted, some of the questions in the study pack are easy, but there are like 20 procedures (washing, ambulating, etc) to memorize. In addition to this I'm also studying for the NCLEX- which I reapplied for.

I think this is unfair: failing ONE test, now having to take TWO tests because I was not previously a CNA or intern. I feel like giving up on everything.

Has anyone ever gone through this before?:angryfire

Is this a hospital policy or a state policy?

I've never heard of this before. Everyone who fails the NCLEX just takes it again (or most people do). I haven't heard of someone needing to take and pass a CNA test, too. For you, the CNA test should be pretty easy.

Anyone heard of anything like this?

I did fail the Nclex the first time was demoted but I did not have to take any CNA course that doesn't make any sense you were a nursing student you've learned all the basics why do you have to study for that you should ask why you have too. I retook my test and pass so don't give up I would suggest that you ask your boss if should could keep your position as a nurse available, and ask if you could have the time off and study hard for you board that's what I did.

It sounds to me as if the OP doesn't have to take the CNA test unless she wants to continue to work at that hospital in a support role. The state isn't making her take it as part of her effort to become an RN.

If the hospital (or state) requires a CNA license as a requirement of working in the nursing support role, then requiring her to take the CNA exam and getting that certification is understandable. After failing the NCLEX exam, she needs an official certification in order to work as a nursing assistant -- now that she is no longer a nursing student.

It happens in my hospital to. Once people are no longer nursing students, they either have to become an RN by passing the RN boards ... or become a CNA by passing that test.

In my state, nursing students or those who have passed fundamentals of nursing can apply for CNA licensure without taking the CNA test or redemonstrating the skills - We already had to do this in school. Maybe check and see if this is possible in your state?

yeah i agree with smilingGp, the school i attended and the state i live in does it liek that also..

pnurse... i knwo how you feel , i had a great job working under a temp permit and when i failed my boards they were gonna drop my pay down to 7/hr and i just couldnt stay and drive that far for that amt. I am now attempting to take my test for the 3rd time next month. We have to pray we will do it this time.

I was trying to say what smilinGp said there should be no need to take that class
