Has anyone worked as a manager while attending NP school?

Specializes in Cardiac, ICU.

I am an ICU nurse manager and have my MSN in Leadership and Management. I want to apply to a post-MSN certificate program to become a nurse practitioner. I'm wondering if there are any other managers out there who have done this or are thinking of it.

Specializes in Neurosurgery, Neurology.

My previous nurse manager did this. His school was online though.

I work in a supervision role and have worked full time straight through. My advantage is that I work nights and alternating weekends. I am saving time off bank like crazy so that during my heaviest clinical semesters I can use some time off every week (or every other) and just work a couple shifts during my really busy school time. I have to remain full time because I provide all of the healthcare/disability/life insurance/vision coverage for my family (husband's job provides for him only, and he has the option to provide dental for the family). This may not be a worry for some, however I'm in my mid/late 40s and my heaviest clinical semesters span 4 entire semesters so I can't leave myself or my kids without full coverage for a year! There are a few students in my cohort who attempted to work a full time 8-5 (including myself up until a few semesters ago) and they have all started to seek out alternate options or take per diem positions. Even several of the full time floor nurses have gone to per diem positions to get their hours in. I am quite blessed to have the position that I do. I truly think it depends on your program and what the schedule looks like for it. My program is pretty rigorous and we are really busy.
