Has ANYONE been hired with priors?

Nurses Criminal

I am hunting for jobs now. And I read so much about getting your license (which seems to be more straighforward than getting hired). I have my license, (2 weeks ago), but now am terrified of the hunt. I have had a few GN interviews prior. But nothing. I just want to hear of what people who have been hired tell HR about their past. I am always honest, and I regret the 2 civil violations and 1 misdemeanor I have. But truely, I just look bad on paper. I am tryign to get someone to take a chance, and realize that I have since changed, but how do you prove that?

What was your prior convictions? Just curious im on house arrest now for a felony and was able to get my license.

Right. I have my license. It's the JOB I'm concerned with now. I have them listed in the begining of the blog I believe.

I was hired...

What type of establishment did you get hired at? Was it recently? With the economy dive and all? I'm really hopeful about this job, but obviously, I have an uphill battle. I'm not sure whether it's a tiny hill, or a big ole' one quite yet. Time will tell I guess. I'm glad to hear SOMEONE was though! That's reassuring. How long have you been working? What's your job hunting story?

I was hired in august of 2009. I had 4 interviews at other places. Im working at an outpatient clinic in infectious disease but its part of a hospital so shouldnt be hard to go work the floor there.

Look at the job application. If it asks if you have ever been convicted you tell the truth and say no. If it asks if you have ever been arrested you tell the truth and say yes and then explain. There is always a section to write an explanation. Most employers only ask about convictions so your only real issue should be the no contest plead. Bottom line is every employer is different. One will say no way and the very next one can say welcome aboard. Job hunting is like hunting with a shot gun. Shoot fast and shoot often and eventually you will hit something.

I was convicted when I was 18 years old of Petty Theft and Disturbing the peace both misdameanors. This was in 1989. Since then, I joined the navy for 6 years with a Honorable Discharge, obtained a B.S. degree, and performed thousands of hours of community service (by myself and not anyone telling me too). Five years ago, I hired a lawyer and he had both removed from my record, but if you plan to apply for a state license you need to disclose this information. Only on a job application can you say you have not had any convictions. Depending on the length of time since your crime, you can contact a lawyer that handles exspongments, and lower a felony to a misdemeanor. Also, ask them if they have done this to help other nursing students who are trying to obtain a license. Hope this helps. P.S. Be 100% truthful on your application!!!!!!!!!!

I just got kicked out of my CNA class because of my background check and I am not even a felon, how did you get past your clinicals to even get a license!? Since none of the clinics that my school uses would take me, they kicked me out and whats more, I was told not to bother with my RN degree because it would be the same thing so that is 3+ years wasted!!! I am 38 and all my issues are back from 96 and earlier so nothing is recent. The only conviction I have on my record is a misdemeanor from 92 everything else that comes up has either been dropped or withheld adjudication. This is just CRAP!!!!!!!!!

Anyways, I reviewed my background and as for that misdemeanor I thought I had been convicted for, adjudication was actually withheld so I don't have ANY convictions on my record. Unreal!

Future Male RN,

BON is looking at FBI Rap sheets with arrests and all. They can see everything the FBI can in 48 hours. Lawyers, Judges, or Senators cannot hide anything from BON. And I don[t know, but I'd bet it was your insistance that you were telling the truth that made them mad. Or I hope so anyway, and you may be able to arbitrate with them.

Mention our 6th Amendment rights to a speedy trial where all evidence is up front. They knew something you did not, but now you do. The fact is, we all need our FBI Rap Sheets (13 week leadtime) to be able to defend ourselves. BUT since you were revoked, they SHOULD be obliged by law to give you a copy. But BON may be above law. I'm just not sure any more. Good luck and post what happens please.

do u have a job now? where?

i'm thinking about joining the navy. since you have experience with that, i hope you do mind that i pick your brains. I have a misdemeanor back in '05, no other record since then, graduated nursing school a year ago, been in 6 interviews (3 of which were hospitals), still no job. I just really feel hopeless and it feels like my life is over :(

What was the navy like when working as a nurse?

Had interviews at 2 different places the last week in june. BOTH were really great! One place (a rehab unit at a LTC) I had a 2nd interview. HR knew about the background, and called me in for the 2nd. I thought this was a great sign.

The other place, was case management nursing. Which I was interested in as well. The interview was wonderful. I mean the lady who conducted it was so nice, and seemed so eager to have me sign on. HR called me and hour after the interview, and emailed me a sheet with the background information I had to disclose, and wanted my references. So I disclosed everything. And have not heard from them. I am SO frustrated. I mean *** (pardon my language). It's been such a long road, and even after a great interview, and everything goes well. I get denied. Its illegal in WI to deny me because of my background. But they do. It's so maddening. I am irate.

I emailed both places to follow up, and have heard nothing. I want to scream. I just want and ANSWER.
