Has anyone done LPN or RN programs at SVCC, Keysville, Va?

I start the RN program at SVCC this month, actually. The process wasn't too difficult. They require Psych 200, Soc 201, A&P 1 and ENG 111 as pre-eqs. I had already completed all of the englishes in high school so I took PSYCH, SOC and A&P 1&2 last semeseter and applied in December right after I finished the pre-reqs. They also require CPR certification and the NLN exam.

FYI: It's best to apply as early as possible. Applications are due in March, but I've been told that for a better chance, you should turn it in around December. There's no waiting list and each class starts in the Summer.

They also have an LPN-RN program, which I've heard is easier to get into, but I don't see any need for that if you have great pre-req grades and NLN test scores.

I hope that you don't mind answering a few more questions that I have.

Did you have to take the Medical Terminology, Drug Dosage, or the ITE 115 class or were you able to test out of the ITE and Drug Dosage with the tests?

Were the A&P 1&2 especially hard? Did you take them online or at the Keysville campus? Would you reccomend any professor? Also do you know how the NLN test compares with the TEAS test?

What does the NLN pre-admission test cover?

I'll have Soc 200, Psyc 230, Eng 111, Med. Term 143, Rel 247 (Hum), Math 120, SDV 100 and A&P 1 done by the time I apply. I hope to take A&P 2, Eng. 112 in the spring. This way I'll just have Nutrition 230 and the nursing classes to take. I have to work some so I'm trying to spread things out a little.

I had taken Medical Terminology, ITE 115 in high school. The Drug Dosage class is not mandatory. I just studied a calculations book and took the test.

I took A&P at another SVCC campus and they were really not that bad. I somehow managed to get A's without studying too much. I did the fast-track course where you take them both in one semester.

As for the NLN, I think it was much much harder than the TEAS. However, until the day of the exam, I had no idea that we could study for it. I still did pretty well, though. I got a score in the 90-something percentile. It covers Physics, Math, Reading, and some other random Sciences. As long as you study it should be OK.

If you don't mind my asking, how in the heck did you hear about SVCC?! I'm always intrigued when people come to this area because there's absolutely nothing in it.

I live in the Amelia area and SVCC is the same distance from me as JTCC.

It takes me about 40 minutes either way but SVCC has much less traffic!

I guess, I just a little nervous about everything because I'm in my 40s going back to school. I'm def. rust on math!

I can't imagine taking both A&Ps in one semester! You really must be smart.

Have you taken the TEAS test also? Also, did you buy your books used online or new?

You can do it! There are tons of 40+ people who have completed the program...you'll do great. And yes, I've taken the TEAS. It was much easier than the NLN.

As for books, I only buy them new if there's a CD-ROM or a program that comes with it. I got most of my books online at bookbyte.com or at amazon.com. Theyre really cheap and with bookbyte, you can sell them back when you finish.

That is when I am hoping to start! I am actually going to apply at 2 colleges just in case 1 falls through.

At SVCC there is about a 40 min drive from where I live but the other college JTCC is about the same distance from me. Maybe I'll be able to carpool with someone. They say that early registration at SVCC starts in Nov.

Do you have many prereqs to go? I'm going to try to finish all but A&P 2, Eng 112 and HLT 230 in the fall. :yeah:

The only pre reqs I need are SOC 200 and ENG 111...I'm taking SOC 200 and HLT 230 online this summer. I plan to take ENG 111, NUR 120 and NUR 135 in the fall. I already have a B.S. and had placed out of freshman english at my college, so I'm hoping they will let me skip ENG 111 and just have to take ENG 112. If not I'm going to try to take those online as well. I'm on the wait list now at Lynchburg College and was on the wait list at VCU for their accelerated program, but it doesn't look like those are going to happen. I was in at Jefferson College of Health Sciences but it was way too expensive. So I hope I get into SVCC because its my only other option! My fiance lives in that area so I plan on moving there in August!
