Has Any Body Taken AANP-2014 FNP Boards?s

Published

I just completed my FNP and I am getting ready to prepare for boards under the AANP. Has anyone taken boards for 2014 as yet? How is it? and how did you prepare for the Certification exam? What review materials do you suggest? and How long did you study before taking boards?

http://Www.familynpprep.com is the ANCC test site and you are correct about the other site which is for AANP. I did a ten test bundle

fitzgerald review course. bought it bc it was required. What i learned in my program itself was more helpful though. fitzgerald was good but pretty shallow.

Thanks for your feed back chillnurse! I could not afford to travel with hotel expense and all for the next up coming Fitzgerald live review course. I will be attending APEA, Amelie Hollier's live review this month before taking boards. Have you taken boards yet? What other review material are you using?

Hi All,

I will be taking the boards this fall. I am also wondering how you studied and how long. I have heard great things about the Fitzgerald Review Course and will be buying the CDs. I am really nervous but I feel like the more prepared I am the better I will be.

I had a class mate that had the Fitzgerald review course on CD's and I found it to be hard to keep up with. It was very long drawn out and a lot of tedious info that was not on the boards. There were too many referrals that Fitzgerald CD's made to looking up graphs, charts, and other stuff on line in addition to what was in the work book. Barkley and Hollier are much better review course CD's to purchase if you are going to spend that much money and purchase a live review course. Also I used Leik's 2nd edition book (600 questions with rationals), Hollier's 2013 book with 1300 questions, along with some purchased practice exams from APEA and a bundle of 40 tests from http://www.AANP-FNP.com. In review of both CD's for Hollier & Barkley along with all the other materials I used, I studied for 5-8 hours a day for 6 weeks and I took the AANP. So glad, all the hard work paid off and well worth the investments!!!

Thank you so much SuccessfullLady! I appreciate your feedback so much. 5-8 hours a day seems like a lot but I guess it paid off in the end. Perhaps that is doable for me! My FNP director said that I cannot take the test until end of September, early October because of all of the paperwork that has to be turned in and I graduate August 3rd. That makes me sad about the Fitzgerald CD's because I have always heard great things about them :(

Hi everyone! I was reading these posts like crazy before taking my exam and so I figured I would share my experience!

I just took the AANP-FNP exam May 23,2014 and passed first try :) I will say however while I was taking the test, I did not think I knew a lot of the answers. I found myself narrowing down to a 50-50 guess and other times I picked what seemed somewhat familiar even if I didn't remember the details about it! I took the live Fitzgerald review course which was very good for bringing the whole np program together in a nutshell. It is a lot of information, but I had many moments that I felt like certain concepts finally clicked for me. How much of the review was helpful for the exam?- I am not sure! The exam had such a HUGE variety of questions covering eveything and anything- a lot of what "basic" information I expected to see, was NOT ON THE EXAM!!! I had questions about HIV, pap tests, hepatitis drug reaction ect ect. Yes there were some questions that I knew the answer right away but then others, a lot of others I was not confident on. I did pay to take a exam predictor on APEA's site and at the time of taking it I felt like I didnt know the answers to some of the crazy questions but I "passed" with a 68%-yikes. I did not get the confidence that I hoped for, but actually that exam was more like the questions for the AANP then the questions I had on Fitzgeralds review! I am not knocking Fitzgeral because every piece of info I got from her I know I will use in practice, but as far as specifically being geared toward the national exam-I fell that Amalie Hollier did a better job! I also listened to a recorded lecture from Amalie and enjoyed that a lot! She said several things in that review that helped for the exam! Good like to you all studying-best advise I could say is know the main concepts as per whatever review course you take and then review some other less common things. I had to draw on every year of my nursing experience to pass! But I did and now I am anxiously waiting to get my license- you will be there too, your almost there :)

Thank you nfnicole for sharing your experience and CONGRATS on passing boards!!! I feel that Hollier & Barkley's review really drives things home and hits ALL the high lights that you need for taking the certification exam. I found that practice questions in Leiks book were really similar to questions on the certification exam. Hollier's practice question book is a good fundamental book to get you warmed up when preparing for boards, but it should not be your only source. Those predictor exams on APEA's web site and practice exams from Exam Edge (http://www.AANP-FNP.com) were an excellent way to practice test questions and assess your progress with exam strengths and weaknesses.

Hi everybody who has already taken FNP AANP 2014 and SuccessfullLady!

I am going to graduate in August. I have been practicing with certification questions since I started my clinicals last fall. I have done Fitzerald, Leik, Hollier, and some free questions on-line I could find. I ordered 20 tests bundle from www.AANP-FNP.com and did some of them. It seems like all ExamEdge tests have some of the Legal Issues, Insurance, and Educational questions besides of clinical based questions, not many, but still... I am wondering if you had those types of questions on your actual AANP certification exam or actual exam included only clinical based questions?

Thank you very much!

Wow Accelerated25 August graduation that's fantastic!!! Congradulations!

The majority of my questions were 99% clinical but there were a few on what I call "common sense" issues that would fall under legal, patient privacy, health promotions issues etc. Nothing that was not covered in my 2014 APEA review CD's as well as 2014 Barkley review CD's. Exam Edge is GREAT!!!

That's fantastic that you were doing practice questions since last fall. When you say you did "Fitzgerald, Leik & Hollier" do you mean just practice exam questions from their books? websites? or did you do thier FNP-CD review course that has questions at the end of the chapters???

Congrats to all who have passed. Thanks to those who are encouraging the young ones. I don't graduate until next summer2015.
