One of the basic issues for me is unrealistic expectations. Unrealistic expectations from management about what can be done appropriately, safely and effectively in a day/shift/environment or given the resources or lack thereof.
Unrealistic expectations from patients, doctors, co workers and the general public about what our profession truly entails, what should be our responsibilities as opposed to what has been pushed off onto us because no one else wants to deal with those issues.
Unrealistic expectations that I have unlimited emotional and physical and knowledge resources. On occasion I have felt as if I am being viewed as robotic thing that can dispense care, attention, compassion and undivided attention while also juggling the phone, the co worker needing assistance, carrying a double armful of supplies and telling anyone who asks where something is or what happened 2 days ago or 2 weeks ago....or heck, even 2 hours ago lol.
:nurse:This question goes out to nurses who have been nurses for at least five years. What is the hardest part of nursing to deal with? I know I might be asking for the impossible but try to narrow it down to one thing. What is the best advise you can give to a new nurse? Thanks,
