Handling Teratogen while pregnant

Published

I'm 29 weeks pregnant and just looking for some reassurance. During a med pass today, I handled 2 caps of Zonegran without gloves; something I never do!! As soon as I realized what I had done I washed my hands. However, should I be concerned given its teratogenic properties?

That's might be a good question for your health care provider, but please think about this before you panic:

- the patients and their family members NEVER wear gloves, masks or other PPI at all while living around these meds. They handle Zonegran, coumadin and all other teratogenic drugs with their naked hands all the time and spread the pills and blisters like litter all around their housings.

- there were no reports of any kind, ever, about higher risk of teratogenic effects if someone in family takes any of these meds (and, trust me, if there were be such an observation, it would get noticed. Teratogenity is a golden throw for too many people in this country)

So, guess what? You're fine for all probabilities. Relax!
