Handbook Adherance

Published

I am wondering if anyone has any information on the handbook that you are given upon employment. Here's the situation:

I have found a new job and have given a two week notice. My supervisor has said that our handbook states that I need to give a 30 day notice. I don't think that I can take another 30 days! It is not that I am sick of the job (well, I am) but there are health issues involved as well which I prefer not to discuss with the employer. Anyway, my understanding is that you must follow ALL policies in the handbook in order for it to be upheld, you cannot just pick and chose which ones suit you. It's either all are followed or the handbook is null and void. There are many policies that have not been updated and are not followed. I say that if you are not following all policies, then the 30 day policy is null and void as well. What do you all think?

Also may be important to note that I am in an employment at will state.

I've never heard that if you don't follow all the policies the rest is voided, but I don't know anyone who follows the handbook rigidly.

You can resign with 2 weeks but if you do so you pretty much burn your bridges with that facility. If you have absolutely no intention of ever going back then don't worry about it.

my understanding is that you must give the notice in your employee handbook or forfeit your unused vacation/personal time. that's how's it's been at hospitals i have worked at. but do what you have to do-especially in regards to your health. best wishes.
