Gwinnett Tech - Microbiology

Published

For those of you who have taken micro at Gwinnett Tech can you recommend a good professor?

My school's schedule will not work for me and I really need to get it done.

I'd like to finish micro in the summer (no sure if Gwinnett offers it), but please let me know about the professors that offer it.

Thanks!

From what they were saying in the info session I attended, if you're going to try and do Microbiology this summer, be prepared. It's a short session because of the change from quarters to semesters. I know at ATC, the terms is reduced to 5 weeks; I'm sure it's like that at Gwinnett, too. Half the time for the session means twice as much work in the course.

I just looked...I think GTC has a summer Microbiology course, but I'm not entirely sure. Since we can't list names on this site, I'll suggest you go to http://www.gtc-web.org => search class schedule => choose the term you want to search (Summer Transition 2011) => Then search subject: Biology; course #: 2117.

I can't tell from the result if it means that course is being offered this summer, but it kind of looks like it is. 5 weeks July to August. From there, you can take the professor's name and look it up at http://www.ratemyprofessors.com . I hope this helps!

(Moderators: I hope this post is within the ToS since I didn't list any names. If I've still run afoul, please edit and accept my apologies.)

Glad to help, sk8nghunny.

Thanks for letting me know, tnbutterfly.

I'm taking it for the spring with O****** from what I heard he is the best so far. I must say the schedule for microbiology sucks a little bit. In my class, i will have to attend lecture monday- thursday and its in the afternoon but I have no choice. I can email you his full name if you want because I'm new here and I don't know if it's allowed to post a tutor's name here.

I know who you're referring to, and I believe he's an excellent teacher. I had him for A&P II, and he was great. He explains the material so well. Sadly, I won't be able to take him for micro this upcoming quarter because of him teaching monday-thursday. I'll be attending the evening micro classes. Nevertheless, you can't go wrong with him. Good luck.

Mon-Thursday wouldn't work unless it's a shorter summer semester. I'll need to look into that again. I've been looking at several schools and have them all confused that the moment!

I would recommend not taking any of the A&P/biology courses over the summer session. It's so short that it's going to be VERY difficult to soak in all of that information and get a good grade. I'm sure some people can do it, but it will be hard. I talked with one of my anatomy professor's about it and she said the department wasn't too excited about still being required to offer courses over such a short quarter. They are very concerned the average grades will slip because of the decreased length of time, which will reflect back on them negatively.

If you do take it, I would recommend having that be your only class. In the number of weeks, there would have to be at least a test a week. And given the amount of information you'll have to learn in that short amount of time, you won't have time for much else.

And micro isn't necessarily easier (or harder) than A&P. It's just a different way of thinking and a different focus. It can also be a bit dry. I loved micro and got really lucky with having only 5 people in my lab, so we were tight knit and had a lot of fun (the teacher got in on it, too). I guess just really assess whether doing it in such a short amount of time is feasible for you.

This is really helpful. I'm still considering going into either the 2 yr or the 4 yr program. If I choose to do the 4yr program i have GA State in mind and i will be required to take chem 1151 1& 2 with the lab and that is freaking me out. I will also be required to take history and political science. I'm very open to either of the programs though. I still have to take microbiology, Eng 1102 and Speech and i've already registered for all three classes to take in the spring quarter starting this monday. I know my thoughts are very disorganized here and that's exactly what's going through my mind right now and I need help to keep my plans organized.

1. How will it be like to take microbiology, Eng 1102 (literature) and Speech? Will I be successful?

(I'm not working right now)

2.Will I succeed if I take history and political science in the short summer quarter?

3. Will I succeed If I take Chem 1 and 2 at the same time in the fall?

In addition to all this chaos I also have the TEAS exams to prepare for and I hope to get all this done by the end of the year. Thanks in advance for all your meaningful thoughts.
