Gulf Coast State College Spring 2014 Class

U.S.A. Florida

Anyone else out there apply to GCSC and waiting for acceptance or anyone already get accepted? I got my letter last Friday and have seen only one other person! Looking for other students!!

I'm missing A&P II and Micro still; work kept me from taking any lab courses this term (web only) otherwise I would have at least A&P. I took Pharmacology instead, so at least I was able to get one out of the way. I am definitely on board with taking coreqs during the summer, especially those of us with a hectic life outside of school. In a way, I believe we have a bit of an advantage over a fall start date due to the summer term in between the first and second semesters. I know for me personally, if I had started this term I would have been required to take A&P II during semester 1. I'm not sure about CPR yet, I have ASHI for the professional rescuer through my job, it's based on AHA guidelines but don't know if GC accepts it. If not it's no big deal, I'll just take one of the AHA courses that are coming up before January rolls around. My biggest concern right now is finding a decent part time job, because I'm taking an early retirement next month and can't work for the state, even part time, for another nine months afterward. My wife is going to be bringing in the majority of the income for the next few years, but every little bit helps.

Oh cool! My girls are 3, 5, & 7! So are kids are close in age;) Good that your parents are helping. You will be able to do it!! That will def make you stronger in the end and also teach your boys great things about their mommy, school, achievements, and goals!:0)

My hubby helps, but is getting really busy with work so I am starting to worry about him not being able to help out as much as I would like him to. But we will just have to figure that out when the time comes!

Yes, I think we do have an advantage for sure. A nice little break is always good and being able to spend time with family or take vacations or get everything out of the way in time for the second semester will be great!

I am def going to have to renew my CPR. I was going to look into taking that on the 9th, but can't b/c my daughter has travel soccer in Alabama;( But I want to get it out of the way before it gets too close to school time.

Any of you guys know anyone that is already in the program? I have read that the first semester is super super intense. I will need to find the post that someone put on all nurses forever ago about GCSC. But I have a friend who did the nursing program at Pensacola State College and she said other people told her the same exact thing, but now that she looks back on it, she said it was mainly just nerves and not knowing anything about medical stuff so she made me feel better about being able to make it through;)

Have either of you looked at our schedule? I tried to figure it out and think I have, but not too sure I am reading it right.

Where do you guys live?

Sorry for all of the questions.LOL!

I got accepted too, although I am excited....the stress is already setting in lol.

Pharmacology is a tough class so try to take it in another semester. The first semester is a beast and we will have the first 8 weeks of class with a lot of test (then 8 weeks in the hospitals). One test is the health math, this is the serious one... if you do not score in the appropriate range, you are given a second chance but you must score a perfect 100 on the second test or they drop you from the course. So, do not try to overload in the first semester. My friends that are in the program laugh and tell me to get ready for "boot-camp" nursing style.

Congratulations to you!

Congrats Kristian. I agree about Pharm, as I am taking it currently. Very glad to not have to worry about it during semster 1.

I don't know anyone currently in the program but I know a few recent grads and they all say that what makes the first semester so challenging is unfamiliarity. I think that being able to find a "groove," comfortable, consistent study routine, being accustomed to the testing methods, etc... are the keys to making it less of a stressful experience. Not having to take any coreqs and being able to focus 100% on the core nursing curriculum helps a lot too.

I currently live in Wewa (lol, I know) but lived in Panama City previously since 2008.

I have been so stressed over the past few months that my stress level has actually gone down considerably, although I'm sure that will change in January.

I am also taking Pharm this semester and I am SO glad. I wanted to try to take A&P Lab and micro this semester, but because of my schedule, I wasn't able to work it out, so I'll take it during the summer.

My stress has gone down too! I was putting so much on getting into the program I wasn't sure what I would do if I didn't. I didn't really have a plan B. However, now it will be a new stress I'm sure, trying to get everything done and then getting started.

I talked to someone last weekend that was in the first semester of the program. She said pretty much the same things anyone in nursing has said, in that its tough, be prepared to not have much of a social life, and to plan to devote all free time to studying. She also said the same thing about the math test, in that you have to get a 90 or higher the first time, and a 100 the second.

I have no idea about the schedules. The girl I talked to said clinicals are 6:45-12:45, Tuesday and Wednesday, but Im sure that could probably change every semester. What have you figured out as far as thinking what the schedule will be like? I am starting to look for bags, I've actually never used a book bag and always just a cute tote or something, but my shoulder won't be able to handle it with all the nursing books I'm sure, and it would be nice for our schedule to allow time to leave books in the car and get them between classes.

I live in Lynn Haven, and have been here since last year. I previously lived in Indiana, but grew up in Pensacola.

I downloaded the nursing student handbook which is FULL of helpful info on everything in the whole 2 year program. It answered probably 90% of my non-subjective questions. As far as clinical go...

We won't have any at all for the first 8 weeks, as all practical will be lab only. The second 8 weeks (adult 1) will have one 6 hour session on Tuesday OR Wednesday. Gulf Coast MC has the 645-1245, and Bay MC has that and a 1-7 PM. We will be in groups of roughly 12. The rotations get more intense later on, either

an AM and a PM on the same day, AM or PM on both days, or (semester 2) AM and PM, BOTH days. Also, we cannot have worked in the 8 hours prior to a clinical rotation. Hope this helps!

Congrats Kristian! Yeah I was super stressed before especially right up to the deadline of having everything done and turned in that I am not as stressed anymore, but like we have all mentioned I am sure we will be stressed to the max during the semester! I am trying not to work myself up too much, but when I think about it I get nervous!

Oh boy, math the hard part..great.LOL. I don't hate math, but I def don't love it! My dad is a physicist and I for sure didn't get the love of math from him:roflmao:

Ok now I am most def taking Pharm in the summer

It's going to be hard studying with my girls, but I am praying I can find someone to help me out and watch them here and there so I can devote myself to school and then spend time with them in between.

Do you guys have Mr. K for pharamacology? Everyone I have asked has said he is great. He is my advisor and seemed nice, but I wasn't sure about his teachings.

I live in Santa Rosa Beach. Going to have to figure out timing with traffic especially depending on our schedules.

That's what I looked at and figured out. From the schedule online when you go and look at the classes, from what I understand we will have a choice of our classes from two different time frames and then the lab is on Tuesdays from that class. That was for the first eight weeks and then the second eight weeks it showed the class had two different time frames to choose from and that the lab/clinicals were two days from the times you are talking about.

Doesn't seem like too bad of a schedule at first, but I am sure it will be once we get going.
