GTC 2011?

Published

Is anyone applying for Gwinnett Tech's Fall 2011 RN program? I submitted my application back in October (I really wanted to have enough time in case anything happened). I'm still waiting on the initial letter about the meeting for the entrance exam. Does anyone know when we're supposed to get that letter? I know the application due date wasn't too long ago (Jan. 15th) and with the snow, things are probably backed up a bit, but for some reason I thought we should already have word by now.

Does anyone know if the nursing program at Gwinnett Tech finally got the accreditation?

When I asked about accreditation at the interview, I was told they would not hear anything until June or July. And I really pushed them on whether they were going to get it or not because it is something that is important to me. While there are no guarantees, they said there were no problems on the site visit and they expected to get it, but of course, they still have to wait for final word.

Thanks busylife4me. It's still early June so I hope they get it.

Kimberly and anyone else who is currently in GTC's program, particularly those who are about to graduate:

Now that you're almost done with the program, have you started looking for jobs at local hospitals (or even other places like rehab centers)? Have employers expressed an interest in hiring GTC graduates? Every time I read posts on this board, it seems like most of the posters complain about nurses with ADN degrees cannot find jobs, or if they do, it will only be in nursing homes or hospice centers. Very disheartening to read all that, and I was wondering if you-all know what the outlook in our area is. Feel free to e-mail me directly if you do not want to post.

Hi I just graduated from GTC's RN program last week...I already have a positon as Staff Nurse at a local hopsital in this area (hint: I got it while doing my clinical rotation during my last quarter :) ) This hospital has hired about 8 of our students already. We have 31 in our graduating class and about half of us (from what I know) have jobs already lined up. Gwinnett Tech is a GREAT Nursing Program (trust me, we hear it from the local hospitals all the time) and I believe an ADN education is just as good as a BSN education. Now for the future, most of us are going on and getting our BSN's online, but you can do that while you are already working as an RN.

Anyways, I hope this helps a little bit. Good luck :)

@Kim or anyone else in the nursing program.

I wish to find out if we really have to buy the textbooks. I am asking this because for my one year at GTC, I realized didn't really need textbooks for most of my courses especially the science courses. I am used to googling for more information and I did that for all my A&P, Micro and Chem classes because we had powerpoints to guide us and there were no reading assignments from the textbooks. What pushed me to this way of studying was because I bought the College Algebra textbook for $168, but didn't really use it.

I wish to know if you are given reading assignments from the textbooks(as was with Eng and Psyc courses), and do they give powerpoints or do you make your own notes?

I remember Dr... telling us the reason they don't give DVDs for Micro was because they were preparing us to work on our own. She said in the nursing program, we'll have to read and make our own notes.

I just wish to know if we need the textbooks.

Hi, The books are expensive but YES YOU WILL NEED THEM. I know it is hard to spend so much money on books, but they are filled with valuable information. And, most courses have special online resources that you will need access to, and you can only get the code if you buy the book.

Thanks TiaRN22

CONGRATULATIONS TIA!!! And wow, that makes me feel soooo self-assured! Everyone hears the "new grad" horror stories on this site and I have to believe that we will have a position once leaving. Awesome :)

For some reason I haven't been getting any email notifications about activity here. Maybe they're going to my junk mail and I don't notice, but odd still. Anyway, TiaRN, that is EXTREMELY reassuring. Like JKCharles said above, there are so many horror stories that it has made me really start to wonder.

On another note, does anyone know what courses we are supposed to sign up for in the first semester? I'm assuming the Foundations course and I'm guessing the Pharmacology course, but I haven't found any definite information about that online in the places I've expected it to be. My registration is on the 19th, so I need to find out...

U are right. Its the top two courses. The Fundamentals and Pharmacology

I have not been on here for a LONG while but thought I'd log on to see what I've missed. Seems like you-all are having lots of discussions. I need to read all and catch back up!

Okay. I am caught up now.

From a current GTC student, I was told we need to register for Nursing 1101 and 1102, which is what I did. I believe it is fundamentals and pharmacology. They add up to 9 credit hours, which means it's not "full-time" for financial aid purposes.

Also, if you-all haven't heard, Gov. Deal (and the rest of the politicians) made a change to the HOPE scholarship. If you were not already receiving the HOPE scholarship for the 2010-2011 school year and you have been out of high school for more than 7 years, then you no longer qualify for the HOPE scholarship. Now, I still have hours left under HOPE grant, but you cannot use the HOPE grant for a degree program, so unless there's a way to apply my nursing classes to my Healthcare Science certificate, then I no longer qualify for HOPE. I thought I'd let you-all know because it is something I only found out by accident a couple weeks ago. My financial aid award still shows HOPE grant, but I've been told I won't get it. I am thinking this may affect a lot of our incoming class.

If anyone still needs CPR certification, I have a friend that is an instructor with the below place. It says, "Two year American Heart Association Health Care Provider certification earned upon completion," so it looks like you would be able to take a class here and get the CPR for the healthcare provider certification that you need. I already did the one at GTC on 6/4, but to those who still need the certification, you might want to check this out. You can call them and see what classes they have coming up. Cost is $30 per person or $25 group rate.
