GRE score required for MSN admission?

Published

I'm just asking if most schools require GRE for MSN admission? If so, what's the minimium score we should get?

I think this really depends on the school. I got something like a 1360 but I don't know what my classmates got.

Have you spoken to the counselors at programs you're interested in? You should get a feel from talking to them how much the GRE score counts, even if they won't tell you an official cut off number.

There is a sticky in the Students >> MSN/DNP/PHD students folder with the many graduate programs that do not require the GRE.

I can tell that I just got accepted to University of MD for grad school and they did not require the GRE. I spoke with John Hopkins Hospital and Catholic University which also do not require a GRE. You can take it but not required for your MSN or NP. A GRE is required for a doctorate degree though. Hope this helps...

I only know what the schools I applied to were looking for:Duke 1100 minMUSC 1000 minWCU 900 minETSU 1000 minGW not requiredThe woman at ETSU said they are moving not to require the GRE at all, for any of their grad school programs across the board as of 2010, following in the trends set by the IVYs. Apparently someone has determined that the SAT and GRE are not really very helpful or predictive about success in the programs, and that they put a financial burden on students. Stanford was the first to stop using them for criteria and I guess in the next few years other schools will be following suit. My daughter goes to University of Chicago and she had terrific SAT scores. Her counselor told her great scores on standardized tests might help a borderline applicant, but good to great scores were immaterial in their decision process, all other things being equal. It just seems like all those tests are beginning to fall out of favor.

If GRE is less demanded for the MSN admission, then what else will be more considered for the program? RN experience?

I can say my application was pretty straight forward. My resume, an essay, previous transcripts and 2 letters of recommendation. I was told that I may have an interview but I did not even need to do that. I would think experience goes a long way. The content of the recommendations ( i.e specifics) of why you would be great applicant etc...

Any specific qualifications you hold. Outside activities that you use your skills for, (ex:Red Cross activities, ACLS instructor) What makes you stand out from other applicants?

I think it depends on the school. I know UCSF and Frontier School of Nursing only require a GRE if you do not have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and only require a GRE for all when applying to their PhD programs. If you go to the school of your choices website they will tell you if they require the GRE and what level they expect.
