Did anyone catch the comment on Gray's Anatomy last night about nurses? One of the residents was helping another study for boards (that he had failed once) and she asked him if he was going to continue to nurse his ego or get to studying. She then said," And the key word being NURSE, or do you want to be a doctor?"

Yeah I did see that episode. You mean that Docs don't give enemas?? Well, I thought that I was off the hook after watching that show:)

Also did you notice that the character that the resident cheated on his girlfriend (who is also a resident) with was a nurse. And they did it at the hospital, in a locker room or something. Oh yeah that makes nurses look real good. Just take me to the locker room Dr. ---- and I will take good care of you:rolleyes:

I love Gray's Anatomy. I have said this before, GET A GRIP it is ONLY a sitcom/TV show:banghead: I thought the line was very appropriate for the context of the show. It is as if I said I better pass my NCLEX unless I want to end up being a CNA/PCA for life.

I LOVE Grey's Anatomy!! It's the only show I watch (I'll put the books away)! It's just a tv show folks. Just about every show degrades something or someone.

I also love the show. I notice that a lot of times we seem to take this stuff way to personally. Maybe you should just accept it as what it is. Fiction. And some of that stuff does go on in real hospitals. There was an incident where I did my clinicals that concerned a doc, a nurse and the parking lot. I heard about it while observing a lap choley. The surgeon doing the surgery was the one who caught them and he proceeded to tell the whole incident during the surgery. Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction.

Oh I love it too! In fact I should have been studying last night and not watching it:)

Me too, I love it.

Ok, point taken. BUT, it does affect the public's perception of nurses, don't you think? I was mad enough about this to e-mail the show's writers, it's not the first time this show has dissed nursing. Come on, with the dire shortage of nursing the United States is facing, don't you think public perception of nurses counts?

Yes, the show makes jabs unnecessarily at nurses .I dismiss it. Poll after poll after study shows that despite the portrayed sexualization and handmaiden image foisted upon nurses in the media culture, that nurses are THE most trusted of all professions. Yep, that is above MDs, lawyers, and therapists.I indulge in Gray's Anatomy as a guilty pleasure.

i can't imagine that the public's perception of nursing would be changed because she said don't nurse your ego. if i am not mistaken the term nurse has other meanings. and yes i have seen residents and med students do lots of nursing tasks. it is not unheard of.

Thank you! This was the point that I was trying to make. I guess I was perceived by some as an overly sensitive nut:) (ok maybe on some days, but not today)

Yes this show probably has little to no effect on the general public, but when I read post after post from nurses saying that they are sometimes treated like maids or the doctor's slave with no ability to think for themselves, I get a little sensitive when I hear things like this on TV. When I know that a number of nurses (particularly male) have been asked "why didn't you become a doctor" I wonder if some people think that nurses are people that flunked out of med school or weren't smart enough to try in the first place.

Just my thoughts......
