Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

What Members Are Saying (AI-Generated Summary)

Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

The rubric is why I'm confused. The original assignment sounded like I just needed to do the heritage assessment, which is a basic document that mentions nothing about health care or health care beliefs, while the rubric seems to imply that I should be interviewing the family after the assessment to determine their healthcare belief. Which is fine, I'm just surprised that the assignment isn't really that clear about it, and there's no guidance on how to conduct said interview.

interview...give them the assessment tool to do...that is the part of the interview, as well ask questions on the 3 main points: Health maintenance, Health protection and Health restoration. What they mean to them...effects their daily live, etc etc etc..... I just followed the rubric. Sorry, not super helpful. And I have had a few profs that almost refuse to answer questions on the weekend...they say one has mon-fri!! Good luck

Thank you for answering! Yeah, I went ahead and interviewed them. Prof is definitely not a weekend responder. I'm doubling up on the first couple of classes, which is okay but a little overwhelming when papers and group projects are due at the same time.

At 1 time, they would not let u double up on the 1st few classes....can't recall when they would let 1 start......but with this program, you just never know what is allowed, what is not. I was told, nope, no doubling up Capstone with another class...but many have, lol Dont forget u can request profs. Best of luck

This makes me sick to my stomach!! Every time I fill out an evaluation it says to end the madness of group work! LOL That girls has some balls... excuse my french!

"hie white group .whats up with our group assignment for nex week.just want to know.what you we are all waiting for?"

That there is a quote from a group member in a BSN program... And excuse me princess, but you are part of the group and if you want to get started, tell us your ideas and we will work from there. Get off your throne and put some effort into it instead of assuming that we (the other 2 in group) were going to start everything up! The nerve of some people!

If you have a list of profs you would recommend, I would really appreciate it! :)

Ha! Learned my lesson on the first group project, and put out assignments for people to pick from on the group project. No more, "uh, yeah, I'll take the overview and conclusion slides."

How many classes don't have a group project? :)

Group projects:

NRS 430: YES

NRS 429: YES

NRS 434: YES

HLT 362 (STATS): NO

NRS 433: YES

HLT 310 (SPIRITUALITY): NO

NRS 451: NO

NRS 410: YES

NRS 440: YES

NRS 441 (CAPSTONE): NO

There is 2 more "key" nursing classes, I think they are ethics and I think Community Health. I "think" Ethics = a no, but community health is a YES

So that would be a total of 7 fun loving group projects

I took 2 "anything classes" and recommend them, AMP 450 is a NO and HLT 317 is a YES.

Group projects! In all but 1 of the group projects, I took lead, not that I am an awesome leader, I am not, but I just want to get the ball rolling and get on with it! And in 99% of the cases, that is what the group wants...someone to just say something and get going!

As soon as that colour forum is open, I'm introducing myself, laying out my contact info....and have started the CLC agreement! And yes I use the same CLC agreement (with minor changes) over and over again....why reinvent the wheel and it is usually my work! Then I make another post where I copy/paste the instructions for the assignment and make note that the group needs to follow the Rubric! As well make my suggestions (not state) on how to tackle the assignment! Most are just happy that someone has started and they agree, sometimes they offer minor suggestions. Of course if ur going to offer up---"who wants to do the intro and conclusion" someone will jump on that, lol Just need to mix it in with real work. Quite often I did them as well, but I have more time that 99% of people. As well, keep ALL official communication in the colour forum..that way if someone is slacking, the prof can see it. I was fortunate that most of my groups went well, was not because of me, was just that the others cared! Yes some were slow at responding, but at least they did their work. And in the 1 class (Patho) where 1 gal did nothing, it was to the groups benefit! So one has to think, is it worth complaining to the prof, or just do the "extra" work! Some profs from what I have heard do give out individual grades. I have no clue if that is true, as I have never asked another group member, what their mark was. Best of luck..

Ethics not only has a CLC, it is a 2-parter (or at least it was when I took it). For me, it was one of the worst as far as trying to get everyone on the same page.

The only bummer in taking hold and presenting oneself in the beginning as the Organizer, Delegator, Master Planner, Keeper-of Tabs, etc., is that it also implies to the rest of the team that you have taken on the invisible role of Team Leader (which wouldn't be so bad if that role was a true Team Leader role vs. the dump that it turns into). In my experience, even though there may have been someone else who chose the editing and/or submitting task, somehow it ends up being you doing it. Editing wouldn't be such a grind if what was turned in was, well, turn-in-able. As a rule it was not, and I definitely fell into the trap of "but this is MY grade we're talking about and no way am I going to let that"...blah blah fill in the blanks. My good intentions up front always seemed to cost me an extremely frustrating and time-crunched weekend when it was due, as those who turned in their un-turn-in-able plagiarized copied/pasted nonsense were already at the zoo; because, you know, "I work full time, have a family, and I have a life, so what I gave you is just going to have to be good enough".

Yes I took the lead, but didn't stress me out. One has to take into account the prof. How does that person grade. And If your work is well and ur overall grade is great, well, that CLC grade is more than likely not going to lower ur overall grade that much! And if u have taken the lead and been vocal (I post daily) one has an argument that you have completed more than your share of the work, lol and if those slackers give excuses....which they normally wont in the colour forum....save those emails! AND make sure ur CLC agreement states what happens in pretty much all situations...good times, lol

OMG, the plagarism. Like really, I see your DQs, I know you don't write like that. Dude didn't put in one single citation, and I'm pretty sure he didn't put in an original thought either. He's also been MIA since he turned in his plagiarized portion four days ago. This is my first class with GCU, so it's certainly been a learning experience on the quality of work some people think it is okay to submit.

When you take the lead, how early do you make people turn in their stuff? And how much of it do you edit? I feel like maybe I shouldn't change their work that much, because it's theirs (or Dorthea Orem's/Florence Nightengale's/etc.), but I'm embarrassed to have my name attached to it.
