Graduating in July and pregnant...advice deeply appreciated

Published

Hi all,

I am in a NP program and will be finishing up in July. I am also pregnant with a due date in mid August. Is this going to be insane? This is my first baby. I am the in the interview process with a organization and do not want to disclose that I am pregnant. Should I? Also, should I tell potential preceptors about the baby? I have medical clearance from my OB but honestly would rather secure the preceptors and then tell them after they accept me because I feel like it is awkward first of all to blurt out to preceptors FYI I am having a baby and I feel like people might say no just based on the pregnancy. Any advice appreciated. I am starting my clinicals tomorrow and I don't know when to tell my preceptor. I'm not showing now, but it will obv become evident as the semester moves forward.

It has no bearing on your clinical placements and I wouldn't think it was relevant to discuss with potential preceptors UNLESS the pregnancy will affect your ability to work - such as in oncology or infectious disease etc where you couldn't see some of the patients.

By the time you're done with school and taken your board exams and received your APRN license to start working, it'll probably be at least a couple of months after your little one arrives, so I don't see any reason to disclose it to future employers at this point.

You also don't need to disclose it to your preceptors, unless as ghillbert said, you work in an area where you would be exposed to dangerous equipment/meds.
