Graduated in 2009 looking for first job

U.S.A. California

Due to husband being in the military and myself having a baby I was not able to look into getting a RN job until now. I will be moving to the Los Angeles County area in Sep. And would like a job. Anyone have any suggestions for me? I have my ADN and am about half way done with my BSN. Ideally I would love to work in a hospital but at this point I think i will take anything.

Also do you thinkI should do a refresher course? Or any other courses to help me out? And helps or tips would be greatly appreciated

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I would definitely take a refresher course in addition to BLS and ACLS. The job market in the greater Los Angeles area is absolutely horrid for experienced nurses at the present time and even worse for nurses with no experience.

yes take a refresher course.... job market in LA is crazy... my friend finished last year and barely got hired at USC medical he got super lucky got in the O.R. idk whats the requirements for O.R. a lot of new grads have been getting in

Thanks everyone. I am going to do the refresher course and take the ACLS. My BLS is current. That sucks that the market is so horrible right now. You keep hearing how theres a shortage of nursing and then they wont hire new grads only experienced nurses. Its so sad. I know once I get my BSN some doors will open with military employment so that is why I am working hard on getting my BSN.

Hi Drea1713,

I too graduated in 2009 and now looking for a job in California. With the job hunt being so tough nowadays, I would love to share contact info with you so we can touch base w/ each other every now and then. It's always good to have someone who is on the same boat as you!

By the way, I'm new to posting in these forums so I'm not familiar with how to do direct/private messaging. I'll try to add you as a friend. :)

About 6 of my classmates who graduated with me in the fall have obtained job, but its important to be flexible and willing to relocate.

Specializes in Family medicine, Cardiology, Spinal Cord Injury.

Hi Drea1713,

Once you finish your BSN, you should consider applying as a nurse to the Naval Reserve Nurse Corps. Since your husband is in the military, this would be perfect for the both of you. And having a BSN, you will be a commissioned officer in the Navy while getting the training and experience as a nurse in the military. Any hospital, especially the Dept. of Veterans Affairs would love to get their hands on that kind of experience.

As a reservist, your commitment is 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year training.

Once you are in, apply to the VA Hospital in West LA.

I am looking at this as an option. I was active duty army for a few years then switched to the reserves. Once I got into a nursing program the rules changed on military nurses having to get the BSN in order to serve. Right now it is my goal to get my degree and want to serve my country either through serving again or by working in at the military clinic. Thanks for your reccommendations:nurse:
