Graduate School at 50

Published

Hello,

I'm new to this site and needed a little feedback. I've just applied to graduate nursing school. I'll be 50 this year and petrified that I may be too old. For one thing, I work 3 12hr shifts a week and will be going to school part-time. Its been 22 years since I've been in school. Am I nuts? If accepted to the program does anyone have suggestions on how to prepare?

Thanks

You are not nuts. There are CNAs that go to LPN school at 50

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

I started my RN-to-BSN program at 55*. Online. Not knowing how to copy-and-paste.

Best advice I have for you is this: Starting grad school after being away from academics is a LOT like learning a new specialty in nursing. The first day- you are absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of what you don't know. The learning curve is steep. Some things are confusing and even counter-intuitive.

BUT

With the proper mindset, work ethic and support system, you can be successful.

Anna, you are beginning on one of the best journeys you'll ever take. Education and hopefully, invocation of your curiousity. You will actually appreciate it more and are better suited to education because of experience and perspective and you have Khan's academy and so many resources online to stimulate your burgeoning curiousity. As my alias suggests, I'm a voracious reader and of many subjects. Please join the club of the education!
