Graduate Nurses-- any luck on jobs?

Published

hi everyone,

i check into these posts periodically and have noticed that there haven't been as many new grads talking about their job search. i graduate in december and would be really interested to hear if things are finally loosening up in the tough job market we've been hit with. i really hope that is has for everyone's sake.

anyone have any news/advice/job hunting tips you wouldn't mind sharing with pa graduate nurses? if you've found a job where is it, and how did you find it?

thanks in advance! :)

i graduated in May and passed my boards in August, have applied everywhere and nothing!!!!

I feel your pain...graduated in May, passed boards in March 09, submitted hundreds of apps 2 interviews. It is so frustrating when people are telling you to have patience. Hospitals only want experienced nurses...How do we gain experience if no one will hire us. Come on Nursing Managers, please take a chance on us...We are eager and ready to work!

Any advice for people whom already graduated & passed boards DEEKS?

all i keep hearing is...hang in....things will open up....ugh!

Honestly, for new nurses I don't think it is enough to look at job postings online. I really don't think they are posting new grad positions on websites. I think you have to know someone or do some investigative work. If you already graduated I would find out the names of the nurse managers of previous floors you were on for clinical. Email them... even if they never met you or don't remember you at least they know you have a jist of their floors routine then you are already looking better than the other candidates.

Call recruiters, nurse managers, or anyone you know who works at a hospital! Call every other week or call one week wait a week then email the following. A recruiter once told our class there is a difference between being persistent and being a pest.

And another recruiter told me not to wait too long to get a job if you have to go to a long term care facility. Give that institution the professional courtesy of one year refine your skills and search for hospital positions later as an experienced nurse. We need to keep our skills fresh or else the newest grads will come out and get jobs before you bc the skills and information is still fresh in their minds.

Ps- LoriNJ I will be on the Hematology Unit

Thanks for the response Deeks! Good luck in your new position and congrats again! :yeah:

Thx for all the updates, folks... Anyone has further news to share? It really seems like you need to know someone to get in anywhere!!

I graduated 12/2008 and have been unable to find a job, except a part-time temporary position doing flu shot clinics. I got calls from a lot of recruiters at the beginning of the month, but all the employers I spoke to told me they want 1-2 years experience. I have had hospital employees take my resume directly to HR, and I still am not getting a job.

I got an interview next week and was wondering anyone can give me some advice. Thanks!

Hi all! It's nice to know that it's not only me who is having a hard time to get a job. I've submitted a couple of applications online and none of them called me back nor e-mailed me about the position. Being unemployed for almost a year now made me resent myself for relocating in the US with less hospital experience. This would be my 1st time applying for a job here and still unsuccessful. I would appreciate if anybody could post on any hospitals that are currently hiring RN positions. I'm really losing hope.

Happiness, how did your interview go? :)

Well considering the job shortage for new grads, I was able to land an interview at John Hopkins in MD and Cooper in Camden NJ. I got job offers for both but decided to go with Cooper in their Critical Care Unit for new grads. I graduated in Dec 09 but now I just have to pass my boards. LISTEN GUYS, THERE ARE JOBS OUT THERE. I started my job search in October, two months before graduation. I think what helped me the most was an impeccable resume PLUS cover letter. Do not try to skimp on the COVER LETTER because you may be passed over due to it. I specialize in writing resumes on the side so I knew just how to format and what to put in it. THANK GOD. I was told by some that my resume looked professionally done. Next, register with a site like Indeed.com or careerbuilder and have an alert emails sent to you every day that SPECIFY new grads positions. I'm tellin ya I got about 5-10 a day. Also, if it states experience required DO NOT APPLY to that position but if it states experience preferred then DO APPLY. Some jobs sent to me were 10 miles and no more than 30 miles away from me but they were NEW GRAD positions. Remember a beautifully written cover letter and resume gets you noticed and in the door, start with that first. GOOD LUCK to all and remember there are jobs you just have to be unique in your approach and slither through the cracks. Oh by the way, the position at Cooper was not even posted on their website but I took initiative to call their HR and ask. They told me no not right now maybe later and 1 mos later they called me for an interview. I am truly blessed. Be patient.

Hello! I know you wrote this about a year ago but I have a question.. I just graduated in Dec, took the boards on Jan 26th and got my RN license Jan 27, 2011. Since you were in the same situation last year... when applying in other states, did you get your license endorsed for that state beforehand? Or are they willing to consider you even if you have the PA one and as long as you start the process of getting the NJ endorsement, will they consider you? I'm just asking because I've heard getting your PA license endorsed by NJ is a huge process, expensive, time-consuming, etc. Let me know if you know anything about this.. Thank you!
