For the fall semester I completed my nursing NUR 212 class and received a 91.99. This is a B+ at my school while a 92 is an A-. The class requires a 78 to pass.
My spring semester just started and several students that received a failing grade for NUR 212 last semester were passed because they scored over a 900 on the HESI.
The HESI was not a part of our NUR212 class grade and students that did well in NUR 212 did not receive any additional points for doing well on the HESI.
If a student earned a 75 in NUR 212 and scored a 940 on the HESI was awarded 3 additional points to pass, I feel that I should be awarded an additional 0.01 point for scoring 1114 on the HESI to earn a 92 in the class? right?
Mostly I'm just really confused how my school could do this. It seems a little shady.

1. You were in a different semester
2. Chances are the syllabus has it in there somewhere that they can change the syllabus at any time.
3. There could have been different circumstances such as a different HESI, different class, etc.
Chances are in that class, it was 3 points across the board. Like if you got 900 or more you earned 3 extra points.
When I took my pharmacology class, we had the original ATI. The school decided to get the ATI company to make them a special ATI for pharmacology. So the people in the next semester had a different pool of questions and potentially had an easier class.
The schools can do it as long as they apply it fairly across the board for that class. Meaning they cannot give Sally 3 points for getting a 900 but not give Kelly 3 points for getting a 900. However, they do not have to amend the syllabus by giving previous classes or even future classes the 3 points for scoring 900.
no, we were in the same class, same semester, same professor. It's not in the syllabus anywhere. The problem is that they didn't apply it fairly across the board....that's my argument.
same Hesi...took it at the same time & same room.

I would take it up with the nursing director and even president of the college (in a polite way!!)
But my school is small, and one voice gets heard. I'm not sure about yours. You could find out if other students would question this also more power in numbers.

As much as this seems unfair it is instructor discretion who they give extra credit to.
This is was likely not given as a "HESI" grade, but as an extra credit 3 points for the HESI to help those that were barely at the cutoff. That 3 points would not have given these students a B in the class, just merely help them barely pass.
Do do I think it is fair to give some students points and not other for the same or worse work? No. However, I do understand that instructors can give points however they deem fit.
There is some correlation between scoring over 850 or over 900 or something like that in HESI and first time passing the NCLEX. I admit I did not look this up myself but heard it from our nursing instructors. The instructor probably felt that if they could pass HESI they learned enough to move to the next semester.
But, keep this in mind, pushing this issue with the school will likely not result in a grade bump and rather put a target on your back. Also, it very well could end up in instructors taking back the points and failing the students or not offering it in the future because you made it a hassle to do so. As much as you want that A, is it worth possibly causing others to fail. Not everyone who would make a good nurse, can ace a nursing test.

oh wow so they just gave it to the students that failed to boost their grade? not fair at all! If they give to one then all students should get it!

It happens. Sad to say it does, and no it's not fair, but it does. You just have to focus on you and not worry about anybody else.

Did you pass? Yes you did!
Do you think there is a diifference between a B+ and an A- in the real world?....nope, not one damn thing. Earning your license is what counts
Worry about you and your grades and thats it...once you get out of school there is no "fair"...its dead or not dead...that simple

I disagree with you just slightly. A difference between an A and a B does not matter when obtaining a job but it does if tbe OP decides to continue their education. Some graduate programs can be very competitive.
There's just not a lot she can do about it. At some point, we have to just say we have done our best and not worry about the others.

I try my best to not concern myself with other's grades. If you passed I wouldn't worry about it. I understand you are frustrated, but I know some professors will help students out who are on the verge of failing, if they made an honest effort during the semester. I don't get upset by it. If it were me who was on the verge of failing I would be ever so grateful for the help. I also wouldn't get too upset if my classmates were offered some help to keep them in.
Since you don't know the circumstances behind it, I would let this one go. Just worry about your next semester. Making a fuss over something so small make backfire on you if you should find yourself in a similar situation.
