Grades In Nursing School

ok...i might've brought this up before - a while back - but seriously - what is the thinking behind writing tests so hard that few people even pass

last week, i took two tests. the average for the first was 19/35 correct e.g. 54%!!!!! what?!?! so on that test, i got 26/35 - 74.3% oh good! i passed no b/c in my school 74 is a d great - have to get a c in the class to progress...

then, the next test's average was 68% - lovely the average grade is failing:( (68 and under is failing) again, i passed with an 80% - which is a c in this program - not the b i'm used to from previous classes...

i'm not really upset w/ myself as i am a bit above the curve, but i am really not able to comprehend the thinking behind designing tests that are so hard!

it's discouraging!!!

anybody have any insight?? any similar experiences?

i tend to think that if more than a few folks got 95% or higher on their tests, the faculty would have an emergency team meeting to see what's wrong!! (laughing with comical disgust)

:chuckle :lol2: :lol2: :chuckle

laughing w/ comical disgust...that may or may not be "internet lingo" (i've never heard it before) but it most def is funny as heck!!!

here at marquette their philosophy is, if more than 1/3 of the class passes the exam, it must be too easy and they will make it "harder". i know this because i also work for the physician assistant program here and i create the exams for the pa students. pretty sucky!!!!

i also arrange the tutoring for biochemistry and human gross anatomy. mind you that these students are overachiever/psychotic/neurotic and rich so you can imagine them coming in my office crying because they got a b on an exam. heaven forbid they mess up their perfect 4.0!

omg!!!:chair:

i guess w/ all this info, i'm just gonna have to learn to accept it - cause it seems to be everywhere...:uhoh3:

Our grading process is a pile of crap too.. :) And that is to put it politely... But we have to make a 75 on every test and if we don't we bet one more chance, then if we don't make the 75 we are out of the program... We also have an Exit math exam EVERY semester and we have to make a 100 on it... With only one retake... The nursing school 45mins from ours only requires you to keep a 80 average.. Which I think is fair.. I would be happy with having to maintain a 83 average.. But the stress of HAVING to make a 75 on every test is aggrivating..

I don't know what the grading system at my future school is like, but in the nursing program where I am currently getting my prereqs, if you make below an 80, you fail. If you fail so many tests, you're out of the program and have to reapply. This school is ridiculous and highly disorganized, hence the reason I am NOT going through their nursing program!

nursechic81...that may be one of the biggest problems i have w/ the program i am in! they expect us to be so organized and on the ball - yet they can be just as disorganized and "willy-nilly" as they want to be

i get frustrated w/ the whole thing...

anyhow, in the end it's probably good for us - because i have a feeling i won't approve of the way hospitals (or wherever i wind up) are run either:p

I don't want to get clobbered by posting this but...

I made the Dean's List !!!

My first time ever and I hope not the last.

the fact that our grading scale is sooooo darn high, it's a miracle two of us made it on the list !

mkue,

Congratulations! That's great! :)

Hi Mkue, but what is the Deans list? Logic tells me it is a 'smart' thing so, good on ya. I assume it is an honour role sort of list eh? Yeah, never made one of those...the beer is too strong up here for studying.

Thanks Paula !

Oilerfan- There is a Dean's list and a President's List at my college. You have to carry a certain GPA for the quarter to be on the lists. Someone actually told me that I was on the List and I had to go see for myself..lol ! I don't usually keep track of things like that, so it was a nice surprise.

Carpe Diem:)

Marie:)

marie...i think that's awesome!!! i know you work really hard so you deserve it!

congrats!:D

Marie,

Way to go!!

How about some of your study tips for those of us just getting started!

Thanks,

Jen
